Saudi Arabia is stepping on the gas. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (38) wants to save the country from dependence on oil and gas with “Vision 2030”. Goal: To surpass Dubai and become the leading destination in the Arab region in the future. In the future, Mr. and Mrs. Swiss should go to Jeddah by the sea or Riyadh in the desert instead of Burj Khalifa.
The best-known project is Neom, a massive metropolitan area with a technology park being built in the desert of the country’s northwest. The $500 billion project of the century will still take decades to be fully completed. The situation is different with another mega project that is about to be completed and will be opened at the end of 2024: King Salman Park in the capital Riyadh.
The climate in the park should be 12 degrees cooler
The park will be the largest urban park in the world, with an area of 16.7 square kilometers (five times the size of New York City’s Central Park). The royal family has promised that King Salman Park will be open to the public. Facts and figures at a glance:
- 30 million plants are expected to grow in the newly poured soil
- There will be a seven-kilometer-long promenade around the park; You can even see the park from the moon
- Waterfalls, caves and lakes are said to cool the climate in the park by up to twelve degrees
- Events, restaurants and cafes are planned in a huge visitor pavilion
- The “Royal Arts” art complex will include a 110-meter-high museum, a new national theater and a 500,000 square meter art exhibition.
The project was first presented in 2019. 20,000 workers built the park in recent years. Opening is expected to take place in late summer or fall 2024. (nim)
