The EU Parliament and the European Council decided to ban the sale of heat pumps, especially those containing climate-harmful refrigerants, from the beginning of 2027. What consequences will this have for Swiss homeowners and which heat pumps to buy – Blick provides answers to the most important questions.

one

Will the EU ban on harmful refrigerants in heat pumps affect Switzerland?

Yes, Switzerland adopts the EU standard. It’s about fluorine gases used as refrigerants in heat pumps. Starting in 2027, heat pumps for single- and two-family homes will only be allowed to use natural refrigerants that have a significantly less impact on the climate, such as propane.

2

How harmful is the refrigerant in question?

Commonly used refrigerant 134a pollutes the environment 1,430 times more than CO22. This sounds dramatic at first. However, it should be noted that the refrigerant in question does not normally escape from heat pumps and is released into the atmosphere only in the event of a leak. Some refrigerants may also escape during production and disposal.

3

What consequences does the ban have for heat pump owners?

Homeowners do not need to take any action at this time. “Anyone who already has a heat pump can run it for the rest of its life,” says Stephan Peterhans (70), responsible for policy and general conditions at the Swiss Heat Pump Association (FWS). The ban applies to new heat pumps; In the future, more environmentally friendly refrigerants such as propane will need to be used.

According to the trade association, proposals on environmentally friendly coolers are already available. Only such heat pumps are expected to be available on the market from 2027.

4

Does propane also have disadvantages?

Yes. Although propane does not pollute the environment, it is extremely flammable; There is a risk of explosion. Homeowners who decide to install the heat pump indoors will therefore need to be prepared for additional costs for sensors and ventilation, according to FWS. Why: If a propane heat pump is installed, for example, in a technical room, it needs a sensor that measures how high the propane content in the air is. In case of a propane leak, the sensor will sound an alarm and ventilate the room. If the heat pump is located outside, this problem will not occur because propane evaporates quickly outside.

5

Are there already more climate-friendly heat pumps?

“Almost all suppliers already have individual products,” says Peterhans. However, converting the entire range will still take time. Propane, which is highly flammable, has construction and fire insurance companies taking action. FSW believes that the cantons should agree on uniform application throughout Switzerland.

6

Big heat pump sale coming soon?

“Heat pumps are rarely produced from stock across Europe,” says Peterhans. For this reason, he does not believe that there will be a big discount war for heat pumps with harmful refrigerants. If there are special offers, he advises homeowners not to take them: “The joy of a lower price usually lasts less than the annoyance of purchasing an expired product.”
