Gone are the days of cheap long-haul flights, at least since the pandemic; Travel is getting a little more expensive now. At least for those flying via Singapore. Changi Airport here serves as an international hub for flights to and from Asia.
As Singapore newspaper “The Straits Times” wrote, by 2026 the city-state will require its airlines to use sustainable fuel. The regulation applies to all flights departing from Changi Airport and will be financed by additional taxes on airline passengers.
Taxes vary depending on flight distance. Swiss passengers will be charged approximately CHF 2 for short-haul flights, CHF 4 for medium-haul flights and approximately CHF 10.50 for long-haul flights. Taxes for business and first class passengers should also be higher than for economy class.
The surcharge applies to all airlines, regardless of whether you fly Singapore Airlines, Swiss or any other airline.
Waterfall, butterflies, city tour
The sustainable fuel is produced from recycled cooking oil, among other things, and is three to five times more expensive than conventional kerosene. Singapore hopes to have at least 3 percent of all flights using sustainable fuel by 2030. The airport aims to be climate neutral by 2050.
Travelers are unlikely to be deterred from new flights via hub Singapore: Singapore-Changi is the world’s most popular airport, according to the “World Airport Awards”. The four terminals feature, among other things, a waterfall, a butterfly garden, and countless shops and restaurants. If you are going to stay in the transit area for longer, the airport even offers you a free city tour.
According to estimates, 65 million passengers will travel through the airport this year. There could be even more in 2024, despite the additional tax.
