Tiktok, the video platform popular among young people, needs to dress warmly.

The EU Commission filed a lawsuit against TikTok. As responsible EU Commissioner Thierry Breton wrote on the X online service on Monday, this concerns the suspicion that the video platform does not fulfill its obligations to protect minors. The backdrop is the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes stricter requirements on online providers.

The EU Commission is implementing the law for the second time. In December, it filed a lawsuit against online service X for spreading misinformation.

TikTok: Are minors “effectively” protected?

The lawsuit filed against TikTok also concerns the transparency of advertising, researchers’ access to platform data, and measures to protect users from addiction and harmful content. The EU Commission specifically wants to clarify whether Tiktok’s algorithm can lead to addiction.

The impact of TikTok videos on radicalization processes is also the subject of the hearings. The commission also wants to examine whether and how the platform ensures that minors are “effectively” protected from inappropriate content.

Young people love TikTok

The DSA has been in place since the end of August last year for 22 online services, each of which has more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU. Since Saturday, the law covers all online platforms as well as Internet providers and hosting companies. This also includes smaller or nationally distributed services.

According to its own information, TikTok had approximately 136 million monthly active users last April. The video platform is very popular, especially among young people. (AFP)
