Following the death of prominent Russian Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, his supporters accused authorities of preventing the handover of his body to cover the tracks of his “murderers”. “It is clear that the killers wanted to cover their tracks and that is why they did not hand over his body and did not even hide it from his mother,” Navalny’s team said on the Telegram online service on Saturday.

According to Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Jarmisch, investigators told the opposition politician’s lawyer that the cause of death of the 47-year-old is still unclear and the body needs to be examined in more detail. Therefore, results are not expected until next week.

There is no trace of the dead

The spokesman called for the body to be immediately handed over to Navalny’s family. According to him, Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, visited a morgue in the town of Salekhard in the Arctic Circle on Saturday to retrieve her son’s remains, but was unsuccessful. However, there is no trace of the body.

The morgue was closed

The mother was first told by an employee of the Polarwolf penal camp, where her son was detained and died, that Navalny’s body was in the morgue in the city of Salekhard, 50 kilometers from the penal camp. According to the spokesman, the time of death was given as 14.17 on Friday. However, when the mother went to identify her son, the building was closed.

He and his lawyer traveling with him were told over the phone that the body was not in the morgue. Another lawyer of Navalny was told that the cause of death was not yet known and that an advanced histological examination was carried out along with the autopsy. It took several days to wait for the results. Officials initially speak of “sudden death syndrome.”

“It’s not just murder. “This is a political assassination.”

Russian opposition portal ovd.info wrote that there was no need for an autopsy. “The cause of death is already known. Navalny died as a result of a murder; a planned murder, a systematic murder, a murder for which the Russian state is guilty. And this is not just murder. This is a political assassination.”

Protests and arrests

Navalny, 47, suddenly collapsed and died Friday at the penal colony in Charp, beyond the Arctic Circle, according to Russian officials. The death of the staunch Kremlin critic and President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent opponent, 77, caused consternation, especially in Western countries.

There were also silent protests in Russia: people laid flowers and commemorated Navalny. According to Ovd.info, 109 people were arrested in St. Petersburg alone and 39 in Moscow. In total, mourning rallies along with the arrests were held in 21 cities. Initial punishments were quickly implemented, including several days of forced labor and large fines.

“When even laying flowers in memory of a dead person is considered a crime, how great is it to be afraid of his power apparatus,” Dmitry Muratov (62), Russian Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper critical of the Kremlin, wrote on Saturday On the Telegram news channel.
