Snow conditions in the low-lying ski areas have repeatedly caused confusion in the last few days. The first ski camps had to be canceled and cross-country skiers are also sulking. Because there is no snow, two-thirds of the facilities are completely closed. Among all this news, Glacier 3000 VD gives surprising news. Record amounts of snow are being reported in the ski area.

Almost eight feet of new snow has fallen since November. The amount of precipitation in the form of snow at the 3,216-meter summit of Les Diablerets station is 40 percent more than in the same period last year. Snow cover is 65 percent thicker. Green meadows on the plains, snow records at altitude. How is this possible?

Snowfall levels were often above 1500 meters

Meteo News’ Roger Perret confirmed that snow depths between 2000 and 2500 meters were above average in many places. “If the snowfall line is between 1,000 and 2,000 meters most of the time, as it was this winter, there is almost no snow up to 1,000 meters. “At higher altitudes it can snow a lot at the same time, even more than average,” explains Perret. But this largely depends on the situation in Switzerland.

The amount of fresh snow wasn’t just an advantage for the Glacier 3000. It took great effort to clear the infrastructure of the snow, as 4.5 meters fell in November alone. In January, the weather was so bad that the ski area had to close. But in the last few days the sun has reappeared in Vaud. Due to the very good snow conditions, the mountain railways are looking forward to a successful completion of the ski season.
