After long discussions about 5G antennas, everyone is probably aware of the fact that our mobile phones are spreading. The intensity of this radiation varies depending on the device. Until now, it hasn’t been easy for customers to find out how much emissions their phones are causing. Now online retailer Digitec Galaxus has become the first to report radiation exposure on mobile phones.

The new “SAR value” category is now available in the filter function of the smartphone. The abbreviation stands for “specific absorption rate”. The value indicates how high the radiation exposure of each mobile phone is. So how exactly does this radiation work?

Measure of energy intake

Mobile communications use high-frequency electromagnetic fields to transmit voice or data. When we make a phone call, some of the energy from these areas is absorbed into our head. The SAR value serves as a measure of energy consumption.

It is measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg), but mobile phones cannot exceed a maximum of 2 W/kg. Most smartphones on Digitec Galaxus are around 1 W/kg. This also applies to the latest generation of Apple mobile phones such as the iPhone 15.

In the future, those looking for a smartphone will be able to quickly find which mobile phone has the lowest radiation level. The highest figures are 1.79 W/kg and all belong to the Motorola brand. Especially for Motorola Edge 30 and Edge 20. Samsung Galaxy Note10+ EU shows the lowest value. This difference of only 0.19 W/kg could be decisive for some people when purchasing a smartphone.
