This year Easter takes place at the end of March, so fresh eggs are already being stored to have enough fresh eggs for Easter.

Easter and eggs go together like the cover comes together. During Easter, Mr. and Mrs. Schweizer purchase at least a dozen eggs to dye, glue or dye. This year Easter takes place at the end of March, so fresh eggs are already being stored to have enough fresh eggs for Easter. But that’s not the only reason retailers are concerned about egg shortages and want to prevent it.

As Radio SRF reports, the demand for eggs has increased due to inflation since the beginning of last year. When everything else becomes more expensive, eggs remain a relatively inexpensive protein. Demand for eggs at Migros, Aldi and Denner increased by around 5 percent, depending on the type. There are also the previously mentioned egg peaks at Easter and during the Christmas season.

More foreign eggs

The third reason for the current egg high is the tendency to consume more eggs instead of meat products. The number of vegetarians in Switzerland who prefer to eat eggs, although they do not eat meat, is also increasing.

To avoid shortages, supermarkets will import more eggs from abroad over the next few weeks to meet demand. Migros also announced that not all types of eggs may be available.

There were too many eggs in 2022

Denner lists the fourth cause of egg shortage as possible bird flu in egg laying farms.

In 2022, the situation was the opposite. Egg consumption increased during the corona epidemic, so the sector produced more. Too many were produced. The result was an oversupply of Swiss eggs. (lui)
