Have you been abducted by aliens and are now under psychological stress? Would you insure yourself against this?

We generally insure our assets such as cars and houses, as well as our health. But basically anything can be insured as long as you find an insurer.

So far this is producing strange results. Baloise insurance recently made headlines with its “good weather” product: customers receive a flat-rate refund of 100 francs per day if a certain amount of rainfall is exceeded at the holiday destination during the insurance period.

Blick offers a few more pearls from the niche insurance industry.

one

body parts

Athletes and artists like to insure the body parts they use to make a living. For example, it is known that football player David Beckham (48) insured his legs for 195 million dollars in 2006. Even the left foot of Argentinian Lionel Messi (36) is insured for 900 million dollars. But the situation might be even weirder: Singer J-Lo (54) insured her butt for $27 million. In fact, singer Tom Jones (83) insured his distinctive chest hair for $7 million.

2

Ghosts and monsters

Some people want insurance coverage against paranormal activity in their home or business. For example, the British insurance company Ultraviolet covers injuries and deaths that may result from paranormal activity with its Spooksafe product. And even protection from vampires and werewolves. Joke? NO. After a woman died after falling off a railing in the United States, her insurance company paid $100,000 to her survivors because, according to an expert, her death was caused by “a ghost attack.”

3

aliens

Have you been abducted by aliens? At least the psychological damage that will occur as a result can be insured. St. in Florida Lawrence Insurance sold 6,000 such policies.

4

separation

For a while, European Travel Insurance, headquartered in Basel, offered travelers so-called premium protection, taking into account various special circumstances. This includes the situation where a couple breaks up and therefore cancels their holiday together. We were also insured in case another family traveling with us suddenly didn’t want to go.

5

Wedding

Weddings are an expensive pastime. What happens if the event is completely canceled due to bad weather or illness? Many companies insure this risk of default. But also – see point 4 – if the bride or groom gets scared and leaves on short notice.

6

lottery winnings

This insurance is for companies. This can become a problem if one or, in the worst case scenario, several employees at a lottery pool win the jackpot and then immediately leave. The latter has already happened, for example, in Great Britain. That’s what Lottery Syndication Insurance is for.

7

kidnapping

Famous people insure themselves against possible kidnappings. But there are also people traveling to high-risk areas. The premiums are quite high and cover ransom demands or rescue measures.

8.

Game

There are various insurance policies in the field of e-sports, for example against damage caused by hackers or intellectual property infringements. Some go so far as to insure virtual players against injury during a managerial or sports match.

9

a hole

Anyone who makes the hole with one shot must either sponsor an appetizer or can look forward to lucrative bonuses in the professional industry. Private golfers as well as golf tournament organizers seek insurance for this rare event. Example: For an annual bonus of 66 francs or more, Vaudoise will cover compensation of up to 3,000 francs for the compulsory aperitif payable if a Swiss golfer reaches the “hole-in-one” game.

10

“Irrelevant activities”

A woman contracted HPV infection during a leisure activity in the car; this activity did not occur while driving. He claimed “damage within the scope of non-driving activities” from his girlfriend’s car insurance. And we achieved this before the arbitration court! He received a $5.2 million settlement from insurer Geico. This no longer covers such “activities other than driving”. Maybe there is an insurance company that includes this in its policy?
