SBB gained significant momentum again.

SBB made a “nice profit” in the 2023 financial year and managed to stabilize debt. SBB boss Vincent Ducrot (61) also said in an interview on Tuesday that more passenger trains will pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel from Easter.

SBB’s current debt pile causes the federal government’s debt coverage ratio to be significantly exceeded, but SBB will spend less to ensure this ratio is not exceeded further. Ducrot said this in Tele Züri’s TV program CEO Speech, which was broadcast in advance at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Cost-saving measures but no staff cuts

Rising interest rates will further increase the savings pressure on SBB. To counter this, the aim is to reduce costs through greater efficiency and standardization. Real estate development has also slowed.

There are no plans to reduce staff numbers. “We have a growth plan,” Ducrot said. Regional and long-distance transportation needs to be expanded, and additional personnel will be needed for this.

More passenger trains will pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel again from Easter. «Working conditions in Gotthard are tough. Now the first kilometers have been completed and things are progressing step by step. We are acting according to our plan,” said the SBB CEO. In September, the Gotthard is expected to be available again for passenger traffic without any restrictions. (SDA/smt)
