Flooding in the Queensland town of Gympie dragged three women into a sewer on Tuesday, authorities said. A 40-year-old woman died, one woman survived, and the third woman is still missing. The search for the missing person will continue on Wednesday.
Two people drowned at sea after their boat capsized near the city of Brisbane. While eight people were rescued from the water after the accident, one member of the crew was still missing. The body of a nine-year-old girl who was swept away by floodwaters in a Brisbane suburb has been found. There were also deaths in the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia.
Severe storms with strong winds have hit eastern Australia in the last few days. Tens of thousands of homes were without power due to power poles falling in Queensland. The Australian Weather Service also warned of “dangerous” storms, “life-threatening” floods, “massive” hailstones and “destructive” winds in Queensland.
