The men’s downhill ski race in Zermatt VS had to be canceled last weekend due to very heavy snowfall. Last year the ski event was canceled due to lack of snow. How long can organizers continue to cope financially with the vagaries of weather conditions?

The organizing committee (OC) emphasized to Blick that despite the cancellation of the men’s downhill race, the financial damage was manageable. Since the budget is balanced, the income is insured. OK does not want to disclose the amount of the insurance amount. The cost of the race, including the women’s downhill race next weekend, will be around seven million francs.

Swiss Ski co-CEO Diegoüger (37) continues: “The financial damage must be limited because insurance must cover it.” Swiss Ski is also part of the association that organizes the ski show in Zermatt. The entire process through the insurance company can take several months.

There is a refund

But there’s good news for last weekend’s visitors: “All tickets will be refunded,” Zuger continues. The money for this is definitely available.

Despite the canceled run and heavy snowfall, ski enthusiasts came in droves: “The open operations were very well booked, some of them completely full,” says Daniel Luggen (52), spa manager in Zermatt. Guests will also understand if the race is cancelled. “There was a nice, relaxed atmosphere in snow-covered Zermatt,” continues Luggen.

What will the weather bring?

Everything now depends on whether the women’s downhill race takes place as planned next weekend. “We will calmly analyze what happens next,” says Swiss Ski’s Zuger. Both breeds are insured together. If neither situation happens again, it may be difficult to find an insurer for next year.

Advert

Luggen is optimistic about the coming weekend: “Not only are the weather forecasts better, demand is also good.” In some cases, World Cup packages and tickets are still available for purchase. Spa manager: “We assume we will be sold out by the end of the week.”
