Huge car parks are not uncommon on the outskirts of French cities.

On Monday, several ministries in Paris presented a plan for how authorities could transform huge, unused spaces into livable neighborhoods. There needs to be more space for greenery and new living space. Drive-thru shopping should no longer be the focus.

Deputy Minister of Housing Patrice Vergriete said the aim is to use commercial areas on the outskirts of the city for sustainable urban development. The regions are often referred to as “ugly France”. Small Business Minister Olivia Grégoire said rapidly expanding shopping centers had reached their limits and represented a break between historic city centers and the natural environment.

French conduct 72 percent of their business in more than 1,500 centers across the country. So they can’t just be eliminated, but it goes on to say that change is necessary. The government wants to support this planning with 24 million euros.

According to government analysis, shopping buildings consume too much energy. They cover huge areas that are overheated and encourage environmentally harmful car movement. There has been excess capacity for a long time due to changing shopping habits. Moreover, considering the scarcity of construction area, cities can easily use some areas to create urgently needed living spaces. (SDA/wgr)
