Greece, Spain, Türkiye. Who wouldn’t want to lie on the idyllic beaches of these Mediterranean travel destinations? After Corona, the desire to travel has been reawakened; This summer, too, more and more Swiss have gone abroad. Despite inflation, despite the reduction in the wage package.

Even more surprising: People are now looking more and more at their wallets. Inflation is making it increasingly difficult for Mr and Mrs Swiss to travel abroad, according to surveys by the Swiss Travel Association (SRV) and Allianz Partners. More than 80 percent are aware of inflation and need to actively adjust their spending to stay able to travel. Third, it consciously accepts concessions on the type of accommodation and relinquishes a certain luxury.

The prices of tour operators for classic beach holidays increased by 10 percent on average compared to 2019. The most important reason for this is inflation. For example, the price of flights to Switzerland is 15 to 20 percent higher than in 2019.

The only problem of the organizers is the lack of skilled workers.

SRV Chairman Martin Wittwer (62) thinks its members are experiencing inflation-related problems. “Decreased purchasing power will change the shopping behavior of many consumers in general and will also affect the travel industry,” Wittwer was convinced. Electricity, health insurance, rent: everything is getting expensive. According to Wittwer, this is already preoccupying travel associations. Association members also confirm this prediction.

Hotelplan, Tui and Co. sees price development as the biggest challenge to foreign tourism after the shortage of skilled workers.

A little ray of hope for winter

At least there is a glimmer of hope in the short term. “For the winter half year, tour operators do not expect a significant price increase,” explains Andrea Beffa, 38, Managing Director of SRV. Expected higher capacities and more competition will ease prices.
