Swiss watchmaker Swatch is suing the state of Malaysia for confiscation of LGBTQ rainbow-colored watches, a company’s lawyer said on Monday.
Nizam Bashir, Swatch’s lawyer, told AFP the case targeted the Home Minister and the Malaysian government. He will be heard at a court in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
In May this year, Swatch stores in shopping malls across the country, including the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, were raided by Interior Ministry police. It announced the confiscation of “watches with LGBT elements”.
The LGBTQ community faces discrimination in Malaysia. Homosexuality is illegal and punishable by criminal prosecution and corporal punishment (pbe/SDA).
