Bähnler likes to work with abbreviations. For example, FV refers to long-distance traffic and RV refers to regional traffic. They call double-decker trains “Dostos”. There are many different models from different manufacturers. Yet only one is truly famous: the FV-Dosto from Bombardier. It will go down in SBB history as a “breakdown train” or a “swinger train”. FV-Dosto (long-distance double-decker train)
Bombardier Dosto had so many shortcomings that many prejudices could spread: Dostos trembled while driving. Dosto’s has a problem with toilet facilities. That’s why it stinks at train stations. Dostos are delivered very late. Dosto’s has very steep wheelchair ramps. It all happened in Bombardier’s FV-Dosto. The good news: The FV-Dosto is now one of the most reliable SBB trains.
But there are other Dostos that are more reliable from the start:
RV-Dosto (regional traffic double-decker train)
Stadler Rail RV-Dosto has been used successfully since 2011. By 2024, 43 out of 93 trains will be upgraded from RV-Dosto to IR-Dosto (Interregio). Because passengers expect more comfort on longer journeys. Train passengers have sockets in their seats in the 2nd class, and individual seats in the 1st class. The trains are so successful that SBB has ordered 60 more IR Dostos from Stadler Rail in 2021. These cost 1.3 billion and will be on the Zurich-Schaffhausen route from 17 July 2023.
IC2000 (long-distance double-decker train)
The IC2000 has been used since 1997. It will be future-proofed by 2024 in a CHF 300 million modernization project. New: mobile phone clear windows, more bike parking, changing tables in the family car, newly designed dining car, energy-efficient LED lighting concept, new seat cushions and carpets, and sockets now integrated directly into the tables. . The IC2000 is characterized by its very smooth operation.
DPZ (double decker shuttle train)
With the entry into service of the Zurich S-Bahn in 1990, the DPZ was introduced in Switzerland as the first generation of double-decker trains. The trains went through an extensive modernization program between 2011 and 2018.
