Mark Zuckerberg welcomed the new users of the app.

The app went live in the US and dozens of other countries on Thursday night. The application was immediately used a lot – many users posted greetings or the first memes. Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg wrote that two million users signed up after the first two hours.

While Mark Zuckerberg greets and interacts with his users, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has just appeared on the new platform. The titles will initially be unavailable in European Union (EU) countries and Switzerland – the group refers to regulatory issues that are still open.

Hundreds of millions of users

Getting started is made easy for Instagram users: they can log in with their existing account. Text posts in headlines can be up to 500 characters long and contain links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes long. The difference from Twitter: In their feed, users are shown posts not only from accounts they follow, but also from profiles that an algorithm has chosen for them.

Threads is linked to Meta’s popular photo and video app Instagram and is seen as potentially the most promising competitor for text messaging service Twitter. This is because it’s an advantageous start: Meta can use existing links among hundreds of millions of users for Twitter copy right from the start.

With other Twitter competitors like Bluesky and T2, such links need to be built from scratch. However, in the EU, combining data from different services can be a problem.

twitter is problematic

Twitter has been struggling since it was acquired by tech billionaire Elon Musk in October 2022. Among other things, the advertising revenue that financed the text messaging service collapsed.

According to him, this aims to prevent the absorption of Twitter data for courseware with artificial intelligence, among other things. Twitter subscribers can see up to 10,000 tweets per day and non-subscribers can see up to 1,000 tweets per day (SDA/neo)
