Dominik Schmidt (51) stands next to the moving boxes in his garage in Lindau ZH. Arms crossed, eyes gloomy. In fact, the boxes should already be at the new residence in Tagelswangen ZH. Instead of the new home, the family man and his two children live on the street – and that’s because a two-day dating dispute escalates.
“All this costs nerves and a lot more money,” Schmidt says in an interview with Blick. He agreed with the previous tenant and property management on Saturday (July 1st) for the delivery of his new flat. Then, a week before the move, the hammer came: The property management informed him by email that the delivery of the apartment was scheduled for Monday, July 3rd.
The reason: It falls on Saturday, July 1, and there will be “a few check-ins” in the near future. Of course: June 30 is the official relocation day in the canton of Zurich. Of course: at the beginning of the month many Swiss always move.
Pain for Schmidt: Because of his two-day bridle shift, he, the children, and the cats have no roof over their heads. He tells this to his management, but he refuses.
Zurich Unterland property management is reluctant to comment on this case and has turned to a law firm. Schmidt himself says that management justified its actions by the landlords association’s regulations for the return of rental properties. He had no written confirmation for the Saturday delivery date, he said he relied on a verbal agreement.
Nothing can be done legally
Schmidt knows he can do almost nothing legally. But the short-term change in his relocation plans makes him almost hopeless. On the one hand, he has to temporarily store the entire house for two days. Because his previous flat is already rented. He doesn’t want to put any obstacles in front of his next tenant, so he vacated the flat on July 1st.
Good advice is expensive. In addition to her job, the newly divorced IT specialist now has to provide childcare and organize a late move.
The previously called movers do not drag the furniture and boxes to the new apartment, but to a warehouse in Wallisellen ZH, where rental costs are covered. And out of there again two days later. Schmidt himself needs to take time off on the day of the handover. He can no longer rely on his colleagues to help him move on weekdays. In the meantime, Schmidt says she should house her cats with her friends.
Large additional costs
And then the cost! He’s counting: He hired 3 people for 5 hours to unload the items and 3 people for 8 hours to put the items in the new location, including the assembly of the furniture. For the additional effort of the transport staff, two hotel nights for one adult and two children, temporary storage, an additional day of truck rental and the two additional vacation days required, Schmidt’s total cost is about 4,500 francs.
As she notes by resigning, it’s the costs that stick with her. Property management categorically excludes joint responsibility with incurring costs.
From the rain on the eaves
As if anger wasn’t enough. “Before I officially moved, I received a rent increase of CHF 150 per month, effective October,” says Schmidt, annoyed. Since his rent was already 300 francs more expensive than the previous tenant’s, he now applied to the tenants’ association. What remains: endless trouble and a huge gap in the household budget.
