Bankruptcies on the rise in Switzerland

In addition, the negative atmosphere was also reflected in the number of start-up companies that declined.

In the first three quarters of this year, a total of 3552 company bankruptcies took place in Switzerland. That’s a 23 percent increase from the previous year, as economic information service Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) announced on Thursday. The economic information service reported 773 bankruptcies for September alone.

In particular, Zurich stands out in the first three quarters, where company bankruptcies increased by 42 percent. Central Switzerland (+32%), Mittelland (+26%) and northwestern Switzerland (+20%) also registered significantly more bankruptcies. Plus was less in eastern Switzerland (+16%), southwestern Switzerland (+12%) and Ticino (+10%).

Overall, the outlook for the future is not particularly promising, D&B continues. In addition to the delayed bankruptcies of zombie companies due to the corona crisis, a new wave of bankruptcies is now threatening due to exploding electricity prices.

Government measures, such as lending during the corona crisis, kept many companies afloat and kept the number of company bankruptcies low. As reported in January, nearly 4,000 companies went bankrupt in 2021. This was significantly less than the almost 4700 bankruptcies in 2019 before Corona.
