The furniture giant, accused of making unfair bids in western Switzerland, was acquitted at this point.

Ecublens VD-based company Conforama, which has about 15 branches in Switzerland, has been accused of cheating on special offers. Incorrect, crossed out prices were displayed for special offers in stores, in the catalog and on the internet.

The French-speaking Swiss consumer protection organization FRC filed a lawsuit in 2019. The FRC wrote a “reluctant decision” on Saturday. Due to the amount of the compensation payment, the decision is a novelty and corresponds to the prosecutor’s criminal complaint, according to the FRC statement.

No unfair competition

On the other hand, the consumer protection association wanted the sentence to be in line with the demands of the prosecutor’s office. At last Monday’s hearing, the prosecutor had requested a fine of at least CHF 1.5 million.

Conforama’s lawyers sought acquittal. It was said in the message from Conforama Switzerland in response to the decision, meanwhile, that the conviction for the payment of 1.5 million Swiss francs compensation is economically and legally incomprehensible.

Conforama said it was acquitted of violating federal unfair competition law. The company was also acquitted of misleading consumers. A fine of CHF 5,000 was imposed for violating the price disclosure obligation. “Contrary to a claim for compensation, the fine is understandable,” Conforama continued.

Both parties reserve the right to appeal the decision. (SDA)
