Anyone who consciously looks at the bill again after a long hiatus will probably be shocked. Two kilos of whistles at Coop cost a franc more than last year. A case of beer can also be purchased from Aldi only for an additional fee of 1.70 Francs. But not only have hops and malts become more expensive, pastry enthusiasts need to think twice before reaching for the whisk. Milk and egg prices have increased a lot compared to last year. A box of four free-range eggs now costs CHF 4.20 instead of CHF 3.60 – a price increase of over 18 percent. Customers now pay CHF 1.30 for quality crystal sugar – an increase of over 44 percent.
These are just a few examples of how the prices of almost everything have risen in recent months. Inflation is particularly strong in food. More than half of the 2,700 foods reviewed by Coop and Migros have become more expensive since the beginning of last year, as an analysis of “NZZ” showed. It just got 4 percent cheaper.
The situation seems to be calming down
Surprisingly, the prices of organic and fair-trade products have increased slightly, although prices have increased, especially for cheaper brands. The reason cited by “NZZ” is that organic food price increases have occurred before. In addition, price increases of cheap products will carry more weight. Because if a tube of Prix-Garantie tomato puree costs 50 inches more, that’s a higher percentage than if premium puree also goes up 50 inches.
Consumer prices increased significantly in Switzerland due to inflation and an average increase of 2.6 percent compared to the previous year. But the situation seems to be gradually calming down. The Federal Statistical Office confirmed that consumer prices have remained stable since March. This is due to the strong Swiss franc against the euro and dollar. For comparison: Inflation rate in the euro area compared to the same month last year is 7 percent.
There is an exception. Because of the summer vacation, flight enthusiasts have to dig their pockets. According to the Comparis consumer price index, the price of airline tickets increased by 6.1 percent compared to the previous month and by 26.5 percent compared to the previous year. Package tours also increased by 4.9 percent and 16.9 percent in April compared to the previous year.
