How to Dress When You’re Over 40: 7 Working Tips from a Fashion Stylist

Celebrity stylist Brittany Diego often touches on the issue of age when working with clients. Because, according to the expert, this topic is often underestimated. For some reason, many people believe that by the age of forty the wardrobe is “canned”, women buy the same styles because they have found a supposedly narrow palette of colors and fabrics that suit them. And it is – no variety.

On the one hand, this is partially true: the figure at this age is more or less stable, the career usually requires suits, and you probably also decided on your favorite shades. On the other hand, life does not stand still and your taste, proportions can change slightly (and in some cases significantly). And this is important to consider!

Plus, who said the “stocked” wardrobe you have now is the best you can come up with?

Therefore, Brittany Diego sometimes recommends auditing your wardrobe according to these tips:

  • find a fashion icon – a star or blogger who is a similar size to you and whose taste you like. You can even put together a board of images that inspire you and borrow some outfit ideas;
  • main monochromatic. Age-old looks in one or similar shades look expensive – and this will make your morning preparations much easier;
  • add colorful leather to your wardrobe. Not acid-neon, but in noble shades: wine, ivory, sand, cappuccino. It diversifies the images;
  • find your “chips”. What sets you apart from colleagues, girlfriends, peers? Maybe you love African motifs in prints or often look at photos of Parisians? Cultivate these qualities, develop them, gradually add them to your outfits. This is your peak;
  • make sure you wear at least one of your favorite pieces in every look. Clothing should bring joy!
  • try on a kimono. No, not original, but kimono-style dresses and shirts: see for yourself how wildly comfortable it is;
  • don’t forget to update the database. Just because you have a pair of white sneakers or leather shoes doesn’t mean you won’t need to buy more. You have to, because the basic wardrobe simply needs to be kept fresh – that’s the minimum that needs to be done at any age!
