But if some shades are intended to be mixed, others are completely unsuitable for this: here are the pairs that stylists advise to avoid.
Black and navy blue
According to stylist Meloni Huber, the two colors are too close and don’t create enough contrast, making the outfit one dark point. For those who do not like bright colors, Meloni advises to complement black and gray – the outfit will remain decent, but it will look more interesting.
purple and red
As stylist and blogger Tracey Cheng explains, they’re next to each other in the Itten circle, which is why they’re “similar colors.” Sure, they’ll be competing, and that’s not good for the image. Cheng advises to combine red with blue – they stand at opposite ends of the circle and therefore create a “pleasant contrast”.
yellow and green
Both yellow and green can spice up any outfit, says Cheng, but it’s best to choose one or the other when creating an ensemble. “Together, they will create too sharp a contrast, which is not pleasant to look at,” believes the stylist. She recommends wearing green with brown, as both of these colors are considered earthy and therefore make a harmonious pair.

Brown and gray
This pair, Cheng explains, also provides no contrast and makes the outfit look dull and bland because both colors are muted. But there is an exception to the rule: dark brown looks good with light gray. Tracy considers navy blue to be the perfect complement to brown – together these colors will look expensive and elegant.
Brown and yellow
Gold and brown are one of the classic combinations, but once the former is replaced with plain yellow, everything falls apart, says Huber. “The yellow will overpower the ‘quiet’ brown and the combination will end up looking chaotic,” says Meloni. Instead of yellow, she recommends using cream if you want to create a neutral look, and pink if you want to create a bright one.
