How to choose sunglasses according to your face type: a master class from a fashion stylist

Sunglasses have long since become not only a necessary household item that protects against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and reduces eye fatigue, but also an important style-forming element. In addition, if you don’t want to dress hot or are simply “out of shape”, fashionable sunglasses will turn any banal look into an interesting one. And the mood will immediately improve and you will want to take a selfie 🙂

Therefore, today I will share with you important rules on how to choose glasses so that they decorate your outfits and, if necessary, harmonize the proportions of your face.

First, let’s summarize the important general rules I teach students:

  1. Your eyebrows should never be visible through the lenses. It’s not aesthetic.
  2. When trying, make sure that the eye is strictly in the center of the lens. A common mistake is when the frames on the cheeks seem to “wrinkle” – and when you laugh, they shake.
  3. If people can “look” into your frame and see through it not only your eyes but the street behind you, then your glasses are great.
  4. Your lashes should not touch the frame.
  5. Make sure the frame fits the nose and ears well, but does not rub or press.
  6. The brighter and thicker the frame, the smaller the face will be.

So we have come up with the basic rules for trying, and now let’s discuss which models are worth trying.

“fliers”

If you have pronounced cheekbones and a rather angular jaw line, like Angelina Jolie, take a closer look at the “aviators” model – lenses with an anatomical shape balance the proportions of the face well. Another indisputable plus of this model is its stylish omnivorousness. Aviators can be worn 24 hours a day, go well with a business suit, perfectly complement a sporty look with leggings and a crop top, and are indispensable for casual outfits with jeans and shorts.

“Waifarers” – plastic frames in the form of horizontal rectangles – are considered universal. But for different types of faces, you should choose your own variation: for example, for square faces, it is better to choose trapezoidal models with beveled corners.

For girls with a more rounded face shape, it is better to stick to the classic rectangular version. Owners of the “oval” shape will suit any variation of “wifarers”. Classic glasses are made of black plastic with black lenses, which adds rigor to the image. But if your soul demands fun and extravagant details, try colorful plastic models with colored lenses.

“Dragonfly”

If you have wide, high and prominent cheekbones, the dragonfly model with super large rounded lenses that cover half of your face is perfect for you. This model is adored by Hollywood stars for their mystery.

At first glance, the glasses seem too big, but after trying them on, you will notice that the image has become a little more feminine, more sophisticated – an interesting side effect. These frames are especially good with a soft, slightly sloppy summer style. A suitable “dragonfly” for almost everyone, with the exception of owners of a round face.

This summer, metal “strewos” with gradient lenses are on trend – you need to try them first.

“Cat’s Eye”

For girls with a narrow chin, I recommend frames with raised, pointed outer upper corners – the cat’s eye model. They are cunning, sly, playful – this is a wonderful “twist” in any modern look.

This shape helps to correct the proportions for “diamond” and “heart” face shapes.

“Club Champion”

The clear straight lines of the chin are perfectly corrected by the clubmaster model with rounded lenses. The upper part is reinforced with plastic “arches” reminiscent of the eyebrow line, and a thin metal rim runs along the lower part of the lens. Thanks to the combination of metal and plastic, the frames are light and comfortable.

By drawing attention to the eyes and emphasizing the brow line, this “clubmaster” softens the features and optically smoothes the lines in the lower part of the face. Try to choose frames so that the eyebrow line runs parallel to the upper arch of the lens.

Frames with complex geometric shapes, for example hexagonal or octagonal, are ideal for women of fashion with rounded features – the glasses will add the necessary sharpness. In general, this is a useful trick: choose a frame that contrasts with the shape of your face: geometry is a great way to harmonize!
