Despite the nice weather, some spectators ventured into the cinemas this weekend. Two blockbusters have battled for the top here: the Disney live-action remake “The Little Mermaid” and the speedy speedsters of “Fast & Furious 10”. Dominic Toretto’s family ties narrowly won the battle for the German cinema throne. “Fast & Furious 10” or “Fast X” managed to lure almost 230,000 petrolheads to the cinemas in its second weekend, who were more interested in crazy stunts and smoking tires than summer, sun, sunshine.
Just behind them, “Arielle, the mermaid” is already swimming across the finish line. 220,000 spectators tried to cool off under the sea and bought a ticket for director Rob Marshall’s live-action remake. For both films, today’s holiday is of course another important day for ticket sales – after all, it is Whit Monday and so most of Germany can enjoy another day off and a few more tickets will certainly be sold at the box office.
The top 5 in this country consists of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (approx. 127,500 visitors), “The Super Mario Bros. Film” (almost 60,000 tickets sold) and “Asterix and Obelix in the Middle Kingdom” (approx. 27,500 Gallic fans) rounded up.
In the US, Arielle “Fast X” swims away
In the US, which continues to celebrate Memorial Day today, “Fast X” sees no country against “The Little Mermaid”. Here, the underwater musical swims away from the action hit with a gross of $95.5 million. Vin Diesel and Jason Momoa managed to gross $23 million in just their second weekend with “Fast & Furious 10,” trailing their immediate predecessors in the domestic market with a box office result of nearly $108 million to now.
In North America, too, several million extra would have to be flushed into the cash register due to the holiday. “Arielle” could be here estimates still grossed $117.5 million, which would make the film, starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, the fifth-highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend release ever.
