Getting sick, wrinkled, becoming more and more indifferent to society: While getting old used to be associated with wisdom and respect, more and more people are now afraid of it. No wonder the fairy tale of eternal youth looks more attractive than ever.
Countless people, like the eccentric multi-millionaire Bryan Johnson (45), who want to stop the aging process and even turn the biological clock back, follow so-called biohackers on social media.
But traditional medicine also wants to deceive old age and death: the research field of rejuvenation medicine is booming. First lab breakthroughs give pharmaceutical market hope for billions in sales. Last year the first international conference of the new branch of rejuvenation medicine took place in Berlin.
When stem cells are rejuvenated
Hartmut Geiger (53) is also researching at full speed to approach the anti-aging potion. He is director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Ulm. He and his team discovered a substance that rejuvenates blood cell-forming stem cells – a groundbreaking achievement. If the substance is given to mice, they will age 10 to 15 percent and remain healthier.
Geiger explains it this way: With age, a cell’s internal organization becomes more chaotic, which means the cell works less well – just as we become more forgetful and unreliable with age. But a protein that changes the substance still cleans the cell. “As a result, it works like a young cell again,” says Geiger.
Already in 20 years the first forms of therapy
The hope in Geiger’s work is huge: any disease can be cured or, in some cases, completely prevented. From leukemia to immune diseases and osteoarthritis. “So far, this is all still a dream of the future.” But Geiger estimates that the first forms of therapy could be found in 20 to 30 years.
From a scientific point of view, this is a short time. Because universal treatments go through many stages and tests before they are brought to the market. “What’s worse, the aging process is not classed as a disease per se,” says Geiger. “The science isn’t geared towards that yet—it makes research more complicated.”
For now, Geiger is not afraid that his drug could be misused for cosmetic purposes. The rejuvenating substance has moderate external effects. “Let’s put it this way: the rats didn’t exactly look like they came out of a fountain of youth.”
