‘Bridgerton: Queen Charlotte’: The Netflix series withholds this important detail about Brimsley from us

Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) and Reynolds (Freddie Dennis) are the servant of the British royal couple in Bridgerton: Queen Charlotte – and his secret lovers. But even though we see the two in quite a few intimate situations in the Netflix series, a very personal detail remains secret: what are the two actually called by their first names? And yes, you could argue that it’s not uncommon not to know their name, as servants were often only addressed by their family name. But: Brimsley’s first name is revealed in the book – and only the series hides it from us.

The “Bridgerton: Queen Charlotte” spin-off is not based on a novel from Julia Quinn’s original “Bridgerton” series. But alongside the Netflix series, a new book based on the script of the series has been released: Queen Charlotte: Before the Bridgertons, This Love Changed the World, written by Julia Quinn and Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes. And the novel actually contains some information that was not made into the series.

Brimsley’s first name is Bartholomew. Brimsley accompanies Queen Charlotte as a young woman (India Amarteifio) in “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” and also later (then played by Golda Rosheuvel) in the parent series “Bridgerton” when she manages the affairs of state without her ailing husband. The older Brimsley is played by Hugh Sachs. The character was created for the Netflix series, so author Julia Quinn had to make sure she wasn’t already given a first name before coming up with one for her new book.

“Doesn’t Brimsley really have a first name yet?”

“I was able to give Brimsley a first name, which was really nice. I emailed everyone and asked them, “Does Brimsley have a first name?” Does anyone remember if we gave him one before?” Julia said to Quinn . It took a while, but eventually everyone agreed that he probably didn’t have one yet – and so Quinn was able to take action.

The name Bartholomew “just seemed right to her,” the author explained. While writing, she felt she should introduce the character’s full name at the very beginning of her chapter. Bartholomew Brimsley was only called by his first name once, and that was by Reynolds. This is a “particularly intimate moment” because no one else calls it that.

We also learn more about Reynolds in the book

However, we don’t learn Reynolds’ first name, either in the series or in the book the book reveals another detail about Reynolds. This scene was originally scripted for the series, but was removed: Before becoming King George’s (Corey Mylchreest) valet (or rather chief secretary) as an adult, Reynolds was taken to court as a child as a playmate to the young prince.

This backstory makes it clear why George and Reynolds are so close. In the Netflix series, Reynolds often puts loyalty to George before his relationship with Brimsley, always risking a fight with his partner. While watching the series, Quinn said she wondered where the dialogue had gone with that reveal. He was still there in the script. But this isn’t the only scene that didn’t make it from the script to the finished run. You can find out why Reynolds and Brimsley are no longer a couple on the future story level in the following article:
