Hollywood writers have been on strike for a week. Their demands: better working conditions, higher subsidies for health and pension benefits and fair wages. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) union has been negotiating with producers since mid-March – without success.

“If you’re a writer and you’re creating content that makes billions of dollars for studios, then you should be able to support your kids, pay your rent and support your family,” Variety quoted Michele Mulroney, Vice President of WGA West. . With the current wages, that is practically impossible.

Meanwhile, a number of stars have also expressed their support for the strikers. For example, Pete Davidson handed out pizzas, Natasha Lyonne, Cynthia Nixon and Rob Lowe walked along and Pedro Pascal declared solidarity with the WGA at the MTV Awards.

The protests are not only concentrated in Hollywood, there are also strikes in New York and Atlanta. About 12,000 people gather in front of Netflix, Disney and Paramount studios.

A three-month writers’ strike 15 years ago led to long recording breaks – some seasons even ended prematurely. Series like “The Big Bang Theory”, “Breaking Bad”, “Family Guy”, “The Office” and “Prison Break” were affected.

So far it is known that the strikes will cause delays in the recording of the following series.

Matt and Ross Duffer – the creators of “Stranger Things” – have announced that filming for the fifth and final season has been suspended pending a fair deal with the screenwriters. This means that the broadcast of the last episodes will be postponed – for how long is not yet known.

Rich! - Season 1 with Maya Rudolph and Nat Faxon

Production of the Apple Original series «Loot» has also been discontinued. This was after protesters disrupted filming in Bel-Air on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It also reads: “Production is currently on hold and it is unclear when – if at all – it will resume”.

Maya Rudolph, who not only stars but also works as a producer, is said to have hidden in her caravan because she no longer wanted to work,

Game of Thrones

In a blog post, Game of Thrones author George RR Martin says he not only supports the strike, but also that the planned spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will be suspended indefinitely. Filming on Season 2 of House of the Dragon began on April 11 and is continuing as planned. Martin writes:

The sketch show, which releases a new star-studded episode every Saturday, didn’t air anything new last week. Reruns will air instead until further notice. Also during the last strike, SNL produced nothing and returned eleven days after the strike ended.

The production of a number of American talk shows has ceased. These include: “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “Late Show With Stephen Colbert”, “Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon and “Late Night With Seth Meyers”.

Stephen Colbert already addressed the dilemma on the show that aired before the strike: “Without [unsere Autoren] this show was supposed to be called ‘The Late Show With a Guy Rambling About Lord of the Rings and Boats for an Hour’». And further: “This negotiation affects all our employees who work so hard to bring you this show every night, so everyone – including myself – hopes that both sides will come to an agreement”.
