Director Found: New “Blair Witch Project” Sequel to Shoot This Summer

It’s been 24 years since The Blair Witch Project smashed the box office and practically created an entirely new category in the horror movie genre. Of course, the found footage hit found numerous imitators and the original film was also continued. The series’ final installment, “Blair Witch”, hit the big screen in 2016 – but no sequel was as successful as the mothership. Still, the franchise must continue.

How reports, Lionsgate has the director Oliver Park (“Abyzou”) engaged and aiming to start filming for the so far “untitled movie” for the summer of 2023. The production company Haxan Films, which was responsible for the original, is also involved in the sequel. There is no information yet about the screenwriters or a possible cast.

Blair Witch Project sequel or spin-off?

A year ago there was already discussion about a sequel to “Blair Witch Project” and Hollywood genre writers were called to pitch ideas. Whether it was this call that led to the current project cannot be said with certainty. It was also said at the time that the two directors of the original film, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, were ready for a sequel. We don’t know yet to what extent they are working on the planned sequel.

Incidentally, Myrick and Sanchez had not only thought of another sequel, but also a spin-off, which is about two people who were mentioned in the original film. Rustin Parr and Elly Kedwar are associated with gruesome child murders in the film – and as such would probably make ideal characters for an all-new Blair Witch twist.

It remains to be seen in which direction the sequel will develop. What’s pretty certain, though, is that another simple sequel probably won’t be much more successful than the films in the series that have already been released. The franchise could probably do with a whole new fresh coat of paint…
