The deafening noise and stinking exhaust fumes cause many farmers to strain their ears and noses when mowing with a single-axle mower. Thanks to Gian Caduff (33) and the Novaziun team, that may change. You don’t even need to buy a new lawnmower for this, just a conversion kit. With the E-Power Unit the machine can be converted for electrical operation.
If you know your two-wheeler well and are mechanically skilled, you can order the 48-volt electric motor at home and assemble it yourself. Otherwise, the farm machinery mechanic you trust will also help you.
No shaking and no shaking
“There is almost no noise, no exhaust fumes and absolutely environmentally friendly when charged with solar energy,” says Gian Caduff in his workshop in Schluein in the canton of Graubünden. Upstairs is the Surselva Impact Lab, where the former children stayed and later in the transition house, which Caduff is currently renting with the Novaziun team.
But not only is the conversion kit environmentally friendly, it is convincing above all that the machine no longer wobbles and wobbles after conversion, as it does with petrol engines. “Mowing is much less tiring that way,” Caduff says. He speaks from experience. He grew up on a farm in Morrisson in Val Lumnezia, helping with many things, including mowing. Today his brother took over the farm, and his brother’s single-axle lawnmower was (and is) Caduff’s test object.
Schluein and Zurich
The engineer tries each development step himself. He set out with the idea of a conversion kit in 2018. Today the Novaziun company is an AG with four owners and employs about ten people. So in Schluein and Zurich. “After studying at Rapperswil and working in Zurich, it was clear that I wanted to return to my home country. But thanks to our branch in Zurich, we can also attract those who prefer to live in the city.”
Time and improvements have been made time and again, from the first test in 2018 to the working model. “But my brother trusted me and allowed me to try a lot on his two-wheeler,” he says with a smile.
Refuel during your lunch break
Then in 2020 Caduff had a working conversion system. The engine should be light, powerful, but not so that you can mow for only ten minutes on a battery charge. “Although you can buy a second battery, a single charge is enough for most people – they adapt their daily routine to electricity,” says Graubünden, a native of customer feedback.
Mowing only starts in the middle of the morning and then the lunch break is used to charge and then mow again. In addition, solar energy can also be used ideally.
Even on soft ground
All areas around the yard or in the vines are ideal for mowing with a two-wheeled vehicle. Even in spring, when the ground is soft and the tractor sinks into the mud, you can mow with a single axle machine. Basically, the lighter single axle tractor is greener because it compacts the soil less than a heavy tractor.
Each conversion kit is hand-assembled in the workshop in Schluein. However, Novaziun will need more space soon as more kits will be produced this year. They have sold 30 units so far, it should be 50 this year. Swiss Mountain Aid also helped finance the production – the foundation also supports business ideas in the mountains.
The Novaziun team has other ideas, so they want to transform their snowplows in the future as well. “Then there would be no noise on the sundeck after the snowfall,” Caduff says. In the summer, they want to offer a new product to everyone who has to buy a new device and wants to use electricity immediately.
