Nadia Di Vincenzo (54) from Naters (VS) is in front of the apartment where she grew up.

“I am eternally grateful to my grandparents for what they have created for our family with this house,” says Nadia di Vincenzo (54) of Naters (VS). For 21 years, he has lived next door to his family in a three-room apartment in the ten-family house his grandparents bought in the 1960s.

When a native of Valais was young, he lived in Zurich for a long time. He worked as a flight attendant for Swissair and traveled frequently. “I still love to travel, but wherever I am, Valais and Naters have always been my base, where I grew up and always loved to be,” he says. After the airline was suspended, Di Vincenzo had to reorient himself professionally. homesick, Valaisan returned to her childhood home when a rented flat was found in her grandfather’s house.

Partners under the same roof in their apartments

Five tenants live in your grandfather’s house, along with other relatives who own a condominium in the apartment. Including Nadia Di Vincenzo’s long-term partner for over a year. “We don’t want to live together. So we both have our own flats at home and we’re still in the immediate vicinity,” says SBB customer advisor.

Affordable apartments with no bank debt

Di Vincenzo paid less than 1,000 francs per month, including additional expenses, as a tenant for the beautiful three-room flat. He was able to take over the flat as owner six years ago. He has not paid any rent since, but as a landlord he has since saved up for repairs or renovations that he has had to pay for himself.

“My grandfather transferred the flats in the house to all his children without debt. I don’t have to pay a bank loan for my flat.” In general, his grandfather, who died by the way, was a unionist who had a very social demeanor and always paid fair rents to all tenants in his house, she continues.

Small rooms with high ceilings in a typical old building

Di Vincenzo’s apartment is on the fourth floor. The property does not have an elevator dating from 1902. “This is everyday fitness,” she says. The long corridor where the cloakroom is located is spacious and bright thanks to a window. The bathroom with a corner bath is quite small. The charming old building with its typical high ceilings still has the original herringbone parquet floor in the bright living room and both bedrooms.

The small balcony in front of the living room, which overlooks the mountains and the nearby Brig train station, is not covered. “I don’t use it much because it’s usually windy or very hot when the sun is out,” she explains. There is also a large garden at the back of the apartment building.

Space for relatives and friends

Di Vincenzo’s large dining table is also located in the spacious kitchen. “I love hosting and I have enough room here to host my friends,” says the social woman.

In the guest room, there is enough space for a sofa bed and a desk used by friends from out of town from time to time. The other bedroom has a double bed. The rather small bedrooms with large windows both have practical walk-in closets from years past, as in the living room. Your TV also has its place in the living room walk-in closet.

Sustainable furniture with a personal touch rather than mass produced products

Di Vincenzo clearly has a talent for flooring. His apartment has lots of souvenirs from his many trips, as well as his retro pieces. For example, his old phone on his desk is original. Pictures, photographs and mirrors also adorn the walls of all rooms.

The creative woman refurbished some pieces of furniture that her friends no longer used and threw away and skillfully integrated them into her apartment. “I live more frugal and sustainably, and I’m not consumer oriented,” she says. You will search in vain for expensive furniture from furniture stores and mass-produced goods of the Swedish furniture giant. Nadia Di Vincenzo: “I love living and I want it to be a personal touch to my home.”
