US toy company Mattel has launched a Barbie doll with Down syndrome for the first time. Mattel said on Tuesday that the doll, which has long auburn hair, a pink necklace, and a colorful floral dress, is designed to “make more children see their reflection in Barbie and make Barbie reflect the world around them.”
Developed in close collaboration with those affected
The doll was created in close collaboration with the associations of those affected and, among other features, has a slightly longer upper body and wears pink orthopedic aids on her lower legs and feet. People with Down syndrome — also known as trisomy 21 — have chromosome 21 three times instead of two. Down syndrome is associated with varying degrees of disability.
In the past, Mattel has released Barbie dolls with wheelchairs, hearing aids or prosthetics, among other things. (SDA)
