Tenerife
The Canary Islands are geographically located on the west coast of Africa, but politically they are part of Spain. They are also called the “Islands of Eternal Spring”. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and is known for its diverse landscape with a unique microclimate. This is determined by the 3715-meter-high Pico del Teide mountain in the center. Spain’s highest mountain even has ski slopes in winter.
Fly: Steep steps descend into the picturesque Masca Gorge from the slopes of the small mountain village of Masca at the foot of Mount Teide. If you take a 3-4 hour walk to the sea, you can continue by boat. It is best to make a reservation in advance.
Fuerteventura
The second largest of the volcanic islands is Fuerteventura, about a hundred kilometers off the Moroccan coast. A strong trade wind often blows across the plain, as the landscape is significantly different from the hilly Tenerife. Hence the name of the island: Fuerte (English: strong) and Ventura (English: wind). Fuerteventura is particularly popular because of its miles of white sand beaches. In addition, the rugged coastline of the island and the barren rocky landscape in the interior give the island its unique character. Here you can still find empty beaches and hidden, deserted coves. But beware: temperatures can fluctuate by up to 20 degrees during the day – so take a variety with you!
Fly: Both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are wonderfully flat and therefore ideal for cycling. On other islands, you can enjoy hiking trails.
lanzarote
While the tourist infrastructure in Fuerteventura is very well developed, things are a little quieter on the neighboring island of Lanzarote. Many nature experiences await you here, including the fascinating Timanfaya National Park, the world’s largest lava field and a total of 100 volcanoes. Many travelers come here for a beach holiday, especially at hotels on the southeast coast around the town of Puerto del Carmen.
Fly: The uniqueness of Lanzarote’s landscape has inspired many artists, such as Spanish architect Cesar Manrique (1919-1992). He built a house on the underground lava bubbles that can be admired today as a museum.
Great Canary
Gran Canaria is a popular destination for beach vacationers in the Canary Islands. The island fascinates with its white sandy beaches on one side and black volcanic beaches on the other. Even cruise ships dock in the capital Las Palmas, whose passengers come here for duty-free shopping. Tourism and nightlife are booming in the north around Las Palmas and in the southern beach resorts of Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico. Besides partying, you can go snorkeling and watch dolphins.
Fly: The Maspalomas beach, which has been declared a nature reserve, and the sand dunes of the same name are worth seeing. The moments when the moon slowly rises behind the dunes after sunset are especially magical.
La Palma
On the small, green island of La Palma is a giant erosion crater, the Caldera de Taburiente, nine kilometers in diameter. The fascinating landscape is protected as a national park. If you want to explore the mountainous region, you need all-wheel drive on the trails and you should take various equipment with you. It rains quickly and decreases as the temperature rises. If you wish, you can stop and walk in the water channels where the spring waters flow from the mountains to the valley.
Fly: Those who prefer to spend time on the black beaches of La Palma are in good hands in the towns of Puerto Naos and Tazacorte with their rows of colorful houses and small streets.
El Hierro
The smallest of the seven main Canary Islands, El Hierro is officially part of Tenerife but further south. Because it is so small, El Hierro has original villages and authentic landscapes that are largely untouched by tourism. The peaceful island is a dream destination for hikers and divers. If you are looking for peace and relaxation in a secluded fishing village, this is the place for you.
Fly: While there are no beaches for sunbathing in El Hierro, there are breathtaking rocky beaches. In places like Charco Azul (English: blue pond), you can enjoy the Atlantic Ocean in naturally occurring lava pools.
La Gomera
Although the island is relatively small, there are more than 650 kilometers of hiking trails in the beautiful landscape of La Gomera. The wild island with its forest, black beaches and palm trees enchanted many vacationers. Also known as Evergreen Island. This quickly becomes clear in the main town of Valle Gran Rey: nestled in a lush valley nestled in mountain slopes that descend towards the ocean. The diverse mountain scenery is ideal for active vacationers and nature lovers.
Tip: Surfing in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a true dream destination for wind and kitesurfers as well as surfers, and this has earned them the nickname “Europe’s Hawaii”. Fuerteventura in particular is a true surfing mecca with its hotspot Corralejo. This area is also named after its cousin, the North Shore, in Hawaii. Here you can surf with views of the expansive nature reserve of El Jable dunes, ranging up to 20 meters high. There are numerous surf spots not only in Fuerteventura but also in other Canary Islands. With a bit of an adventurous spirit, you might even find some empty waves.
