Is John Wick (Keanu Reeves) dead? The end of “John Wick: Chapter 4” gives the impression that he bled to death in Paris and is now buried next to his wife. It would be a fitting conclusion to the series, as we all know there’s no other way for John Wick to get the rest he deserves. This also fit the statements of those involved that “John Wick 5‘ is currently not up for debate. But of course, in an action series like this, deaths don’t necessarily remain final. If director Chad Stahelski ever wants to do John Wick 5, they’ll do John Wick 5.
After all, it’s pretty easy to explain that the killer, along with his friends like Winston (Ian McShane) and Caine (Donnie Yen), only pretended to be dead. Because even though he’s paid his debt by winning the duel against the Marquis (Bill Skarsgård), he knows he’ll never be truly free. There will always be someone who makes a name for himself by killing or taking revenge on John Wick. After all, the very powerful family of the Marquis, for example, should not accept the events so easily. A fake death would be an opportunity to enjoy his retirement after all.
Wasn’t “John Wick 5” already announced?
A major argument used for the fact that John Wick has yet to live: “John Wick 5” had been announced before. Originally, the plan was to record “John Wick 4” and “John Wick 5” in one take. So Chad Stahelski definitely had other plans.
However, it is not clear to what extent these have changed. The fact that the shooting was planned together indicates that both films were particularly closely linked – which seems strange after the very clear conclusion of “John Wick 4”. However, my theory is that the events of John Wick 4 were originally split into two movies – hence the epic runtime of nearly three hours. Chad Stahelski just revealed that an early cut actually lasted three hours and 45 minutes.
The credits scene: a future without John Wick?
Which is not a definitive answer to the “John Wick 5” question the first credits scene of the action sequence. In this one we only see how Akira (Rina Sawama) approaches Caine in the street armed with a stabbing weapon to avenge her father’s death. The confrontation is not resolved. Whether Akira kills Caine, he senses her and turns himself off, or something else happens, we don’t know. Could this scene tease a sequel? Or is it just to show us that the cycle of violence never ends because someone always wants revenge, and then someone else will seek revenge? This statement also fits very well with the fact that John Wick himself only finds rest in (feigned) death.

Sebastian discusses in his video, how the scene could set up a sequel and a return of Keanu Reeves as John Wick, as well as teasing a spin-off starring Akira. In this context, it’s interesting that Akira is the only character besides John Wick to have a second character poster published leading up to the theatrical release. However, my theory is that this is only due to Rina Sawayama’s popularity. The pop singer, who makes her cinema debut here, has long been a global brand, is probably the second biggest star in the cast after Reeves and can once again attract a completely different audience. That’s what they wanted to pursue with the second figure poster, which was also deliberately shared mainly on social media… and not to suggest that their figure is more important than everyone else.
We see Keanu Reeves again as John Wick
One thing seems pretty certain though – completely regardless of whether “John Wick 5” ever comes out and whether John Wick is alive or dead at the end of “Chapter 4”. We’ll see Keanu Reeves in the role at least once more.
The spinoff”ballerina‘ from ‘Underworld’ director Len Wiseman of Ana de Armas (“Knives Out”) is set between the events of “John Wick 3” And “John Wick 4and will reference it – with appearances by some well-known characters – in addition to Reeves as Wick, McShane as Winston, among others.
With the latter name we are immediately on a second spin-off project. The upcoming miniseries for Amazon Prime Video, The Continental, will show how Winston ended up in the offshoot of New York’s great hotel. Since the three-episode feature film series, starring Colin Woodell as a young Winston and starring Mel Gibson in a supporting role, is set in the 1970s, Reeves is unlikely to appear here. But there were always rumors that there might also be a backstory involving McShane and Reeves.
So you see: whether “John Wick 5” is coming is uncertain. A lot certainly comes from the world of “John Wick” – for example, we didn’t even mention a possible spin-off about Halle Berry’s Sofia from “John Wick 3” in this article. And if you want to learn more about “John Wick 4,” we recommend our on-screen love podcast.
In the current issue, as the author of our “John Wick 4” review, I’m a guest with moderator Sebastian and film critic Sidney Schering to discuss the new installment of the action saga, as well as a bit about the entire series. What makes the action so special? And why wasn’t one of the three of us a fan until the fourth part?
