Carnivorous sea slugs received the most votes in the last public online poll, the institutions reported in Frankfurt on Thursday. The competition jury had previously selected five species from among the proposals received, taking into account technical considerations.
Concholepas concholepas are one of the rock snails and can be found in the southeast Pacific – off Chile and Peru. Adult specimens can reach a shell length of about 15 centimeters. In their homeland, the snail is of “great cultural, social, economic, evolutionary and ecological importance,” according to the researchers. “But their stocks are endangered by overfishing.” Their meat is traded as a delicacy around the world. The species is also threatened by pollution in coastal areas.
