One of the most brutal and gory series of all time returns: the sequel “Spartacus” is coming!

“Spartacus” was never for the faint hearted. In the series, viewers followed the titular gladiator as he led a bloody revolt against Rome. The historical epic produced by Starz was especially captivating because of its consistent storytelling style, in which you could never be sure that your own favorite character wouldn’t die bloody in the next battle. And when it came to freedom of movement, the series got to the point – it’s not for nothing that the series is often described as “Game Of Thrones” without fantasy.

Fans of the series now have a reason to rejoice, because it has become known that the creators of “Spartacus” are at work Steven S. DeKnight on a sequel, which is again produced and published by the American pay TV channel Starz. DeKnight will serve as both showrunner and executive producer on the as-yet-untitled series.

The sequel series is intended to tie in with the events of the series finale. After the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army, a new story of betrayal, deceit, power, greed and blood will unfold in the shadow of Rome. There will also be a reunion with some iconic characters from the original series.

“Spartacus”: Not only bloody but also very good!

So fans can rightly hope that the new series will match the quality of the old episodes again, because “Spartacus” was not only a bloody series, but also a very good one: the historical epic is featured twice on the IMDB list of the best series of all time. While the original series currently ranks at number 201, the prequel “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” has settled just behind at number 218 (as of February 2023).

Will the series rely on such a high level of violence again? The series was known for its bloodthirstiness, sometimes cracking and splashing so mercilessly that in Germany the series was only released by the FSK for 18 years and older. Only the last season was released uncut in this country – of course with an FSK 18 stamp.

It’s not yet known when the series will launch, but as it’s still in a very early stage of development, we don’t expect it to be released before 2024..
