From Marvel fatigue: “Black Panther 2” breaks MCU record on Disney+

Since “Avengers: Endgame,” social media has been buzzing about Marvel fatigue: some fans say they’re not as excited about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies as they were in the beginning. But it shows once again that social media doesn’t necessarily reflect reality – and that’s with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which premiered February 1, 2023 on Disney+.

Because “Black Panther 2” is now the world’s most-watched streaming premiere of a Marvel movie on the Disney streaming service, the mouse company announced in a press release. For this, the streamed hours in the first five days are used as a benchmark.

So Wakanda Forever has the MCU movies Black Widow“,”Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings“,”Eternals“,”Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness” And “Thor 4: love and thunder” suspended, all of which were also released on the platform after the launch of Disney+. Interesting: “Black Widow” appeared in theaters and on Disney+ in parallel in the midst of the corona pandemic, but “Black Panther 2” apparently received more streaming. Probably because “Black Widow” was only available at extra cost?

Equally interesting, Black Panther 2 also trumped Doctor Strange 2, which grossed even more theatrically with $955.8 million versus Wakanda Forever’s (current) $842.8 million. But here we have a problem with the record message from Marvel and Disney:

Because unlike the box office of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” For the title as “the most watched streaming premiere of a Marvel movie on Disney+ worldwide” there is no point of comparison: how much more was “Black Panther 2” watched? How big is the difference with the other titles? And which film was the previous record holder? “Doctor Strange 2”? Or maybe “Eternals,” the only MCU movie to make America’s Most-Streamed Movies of 2022 list?

However, without this information, it can still be seen from the record of “Black Panther 2” that interest in the MCU in general and in Wakanda in particular is still high – especially if you also factor in the very decent box office revenue .

And speaking of cinema, the next MCU movie, namely “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania”, will open there on February 15, 2023. In it, the two Avengers members and their family must face the new villain Kang (Jonathan Majors):
