Moviepilot and Filmstarts are two of the largest German sites when it comes to reporting on films and series. This year we used the combined expertise of the two editors for a major series ranking – as every TV and streaming highlight was watched by both teams, so it was possible to vote on what the highlights from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video , Disney+ and Co . goods.
The rule was that the series season in question had to have started regularly in Germany in 2022. Titles that could only be seen abroad or at events were not allowed to be chosen. The Netflix highlight “Copenhagen Cowboy” was not an option, even though FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen had already declared it “craziest and one of the best series of the year”. Even though we’ve already seen her, the regular Netflix launch isn’t until January 5, 2023, so she won’t be up for election until next year.
But enough of the preamble: Here are the 25 best shows of 2022. From place 25 to 11 in a compact list, for the top 10 with a short explanation.
Place 25 – 11
25. “Abbott Elementary School”
24. “Pachinko”
23. “Peacemakers”
22. “We Own This City”
21. “Moon Knight”
19. “The Patient” & “Wednesday”
18. “Pam and Tommy”
17. “1883”
16. “Irma Vep”
15. “Peripherals”
14. “The Rehearsal”
13. “For All Mankind – Season 3”
12. “Only Murders in the Building – Season 2”
11. “White Lotus – Season 2”
10th Place: “Heartstopper”
Although Netflix produced and released by far the most series in 2022, they were not necessarily the best. The romantic comedy adaptation “Heartstopper” is one of only two Netflix originals in the top 10 best series of 2022. The touching and funny love story of the two students Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) deserves its appreciation more than place. Moviepilot editor Max Wieseler celebrates”the most likeable Netflix series in a long time“, which is also “a comforting hug that makes you forget about the stressful everyday life”.

9th Place: “Euphoria – Season 2”
Hardly any season of a series has been as talked about in 2022 as the second season of “Euphoria”. With that, the dramatic story of young people who stumble through life with a lot of sex and drugs really got off the ground. There were records in the US and the series also found many fans in Germany. In the meantime, there should even be a German remake of the material, which originally came from Israel but only really became known through the HBO version with superstar Zendaya.

8th Place: “Stranger Things – Season 4”
Just before the series “Wednesday”, which landed at number 19 with us, the fourth season of “Stranger Things” became the most watched Netflix production in 2022 – and that is certainly also due to the fact that the latest adventures of the The 1980s small town Hawkins got really good with kids battling a supernatural threat. Those responsible did not mess with that, they really hit it off. With an even bigger budget, there were episodes that, with running times of up to 150 minutes, made many films green with envy. That worked for FILMSTARTS editor Markus Trutt: “Absolutely epic and full of goosebumps moments: In the case of Stranger Things, bigger is actually better!”, he writes about his personal number 1 of 2022.

7th Place: “The Boys – Season 3”
With the third season of “The Boys,” Amazon Prime Video has gone a lot better. Never before has so much body fluid flowed in the weird comic adaptations about superheroes, who often behave anything but heroic. This caused the season to be represented in numerous top 10 lists by the two editors – albeit never at the top. And so it’s not enough for the top of the third season “The Boys”, but for a strong seventh place in our annual ranking.

6th Place: “Severance Compensation”
The heavily cast sci-fi thriller-drama series “Severance” about a company that uses an experiment to ensure that its employees don’t have to bring bad thoughts home from work quickly developed into an absolute insider tip, the Moviepilot editor-in-chief Lisa Ludwig in April 2022 as “disturbing sci-fi mindfuck that hardly anyone knows about“, indicated. The word ‘insider tip’ is no longer so appropriate, at least in our editors, when you consider how many top 10 lists of colleagues the production for streaming service AppleTV + ended up in when we voted for the best series 2022.

5th Place: “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
The top 5 opens with one of the big fantasy hits of 2022: “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” caused countless discussions. There were shitstorms like declarations of love. In any case, there are plenty of fans on our two editors who have put the series in their top 10 lists – some even way above that. FILMSTARTS editor Julius Vietzen was already enthusiastic his criticism of the first two episodes of “spectacular images that always give you goosebumps”. He didn’t revise his rating even after the entire season – on the contrary: “The Rings of Power” even landed at number 1 in his personal ranking for the year: because “despite some narrative flaws: no series in 2022 inspired me anymore, touched me and got carried away like ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’,” he explained during the pageant.

4th Place: “Better Call Saul: Season 6”
Just like with “Breaking Bad”, Vince Gilligan, with the support of Peter Gould, also managed to find a grandiose conclusion to the spin-off “Better Call Saul”. Not only that! The sixth season of the series produced for the American TV channel AMC, which was first shown on Netflix in Germany, goes one step further. As Jimmy McGill finally becomes the scheming crime lawyer Saul Goodman, Gilligan has us searching for plenty of other characters. And the many “Breaking Bad” allusions are not an end in themselves, but extend both series. Esther Stroh of Moviepilot editors raves about her personal number 1, who managed to “revive the world of ‘Breaking Bad’ from scratchwithout becoming dependent on the predecessor and skilfully culminating in a perfect finale.”

3rd Place: “The Bear: King Of The Kitchen”
The author of these lines ventures to predict that the Disney Plus series “The Bear: King Of The Kitchen” “only” came in third place because it was seen by significantly fewer people than the two series that came first. Because in the voting she almost always finished very, very high among the rest. FILMSTARTS editor Nina Becker complained at the end of October 2022 in a gushing streaming tip about how “hardly anyone watches one of the best series of the year” and meanwhile, when the whole year is over, even says: It’s the best series of the year! The author of these lines can only agree: “The total constant tension of the protagonists in a hectic kitchen of a small Chicago delicatessen was transferred to me when I watched it, as otherwise only in my favorite movies ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ happens. This makes ‘The Bear’ more intense than any other series I’ve seen and also grabbed me like no other in 2022.”

2nd Place: “House of the Dragon”
Finally there were supplies from Westeros and the “Game Of Thrones” prequel “House Of The Dragon” was able to meet the expectations of many fans. The fantasy series featured in more than a dozen individual leaderboards. She even finished at the top with FILMSTARTS video editor Sebastian Gerdshikow. His conclusion: “‘House Of The Dragon’ really made you forget the infamy of ‘Game Of Thrones – Season 8’. The series delivers great characters, crazy time jumps, exciting intrigue and more dragons than ever before – and that alone is awesome!”

1st Place: “Andor”
In the end, the winner was pretty clearly determined. No series was represented in so many individual lists, no series was at the top so many times. We’re talking about “Andor”, the Disney Plus production that for many fans is one of the best things ever told in the world of “Star Wars” – with hardly any fantasy elements, but a lot of politics, yet more anti-fascism, tough thriller drama and survival struggle.
‘Star Wars’ fan and expert Matthias Hopf of the editors of Moviepilot waxed lyrical a month ago in a text about the series, which should finish at the top of its ranking at the end of the year: ‘Andor’ finally shows what ‘ Star Wars’ can be like a series” and FILMSTARTS editor Annemarie Havran “hasn’t seen a series get better and better from episode to episode in a very long time.” The “secret star” is Nicholas Britell’s score. The music is also praised by FILMSTARTS author Sidney Schering, who also praises it: “A refined dramaturgy, a mature visual language, strong acting and music that gets under your skin meet an observational portrayal of the mechanisms of an oppressive system. Add to that the painful emotions of those who try to rebel: ‘Andor’ shows ‘Star Wars’ from its debilitating side!”
