After “Black Panther 2” one thing is certain: Sensational MCU record series ends after 12 years

Who do you see over and over again in Marvel and especially in the MCU? For a long time it was Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, currently Benedict Wong is popping up everywhere as Sorcerer Supreme Wong, yeah both are nothing against the constancy of Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson. For twelve years, he appeared in at least one Marvel project per calendar year. But this sensational record series, unique to Marvel, is now a thing of the past.

Because in 2022, for the first time since 2010, there was no Marvel project starring Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson. He did not appear in any movies, series or specials (e.g. The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special). We didn’t have to miss his face completely, because when the title heroine breaks through the tiles of the Disney+ streaming service in the last episode of “She-Hulk”, he can be seen on one of the tiles, but sorry Phil : That doesn’t count as appearance.

Phil Coulson’s sensational Marvel series

Clark Gregg debuted as Phil Coulson in Iron Man in 2008, but that wasn’t the start of his sensational record-breaking streak. Because there was no project with him in 2009. But in 2010 things really took off – and a hiatus wasn’t to follow anytime soon. Here are Coulson’s performances over the years:

  • 2010: “Iron Man 2”
  • 2011: “Thor”, “The Consultant” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer”
  • 2012: “The Avengers”
  • 2013: “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 1”
  • 2014: “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 1” & “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 2”
  • 2015: “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 2” & “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 3”
  • 2016: “Agents Of SHIELD – Season 3” & “Agents Of SHIELD – Season 4”
  • 2017: “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 4” & “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 5”
  • 2018: “AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 5”
  • 2019: “Captain Marvel” & “Agents Of SHIELD – Season 6”
  • 2020: “Agents Of SHIELD – Season 7”
  • 2021: “What if…?” (& “Loki”?)

As you can see, Coulson’s hit series is largely aided by the Agents Of SHIELD series. No other Marvel series ran that long. Phil Coulson was able to perform consistently year after year. After the end of this streak in 2020, 2021 would have almost marked the end of Coulson’s success story. Would his performance in “Loki”, which consists of archive footage, really count? After all, actor Clark Gregg didn’t have to do anything for it. But then there was the animated series “What If…?” Coulson can be seen in two episodes and Clark Gregg personally stood in front of the microphone to voice the role.

» Everything from Marvel on Disney+*

The upcoming second season of What If…? is also the most likely place where we will see Coulson again. Finally, some alternate versions can be told of events in which he was involved. Whether we will see him again in a live-action project, possibly even in a film, is more than the question.

A Marvel record! But also an MCU record?

Finally is highly controversial over whether the Marvel series Agents Of SHIELD is canon at all. In 2021, serious doubts arose when the series (like “Agent Carter”) was sorted at Disney + into a legacy section, which also includes the “X-Men” films, for example.

However, there is no official confirmation of this. The question is whether Phil Coulson and Clark Gregg have an MCU record series as the only character or actor to always be represented in at least one project a year for twelve years. But they certainly have a Marvel record range – which has now come to an end, as there is no surprise cameo hidden in The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special or Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever.
