Taylor Swift clarifies: the American singer has won four MTV Europe Music Awards this year. This made her the queen of the night in Düsseldorf. Swift won the Best Female Artist, Best Video, Best Pop and Best Long Version of a Video categories late Sunday night.
The 32-year-old surprisingly overtook Harry Styles, who was still ahead with seven nominations, but in the end only one, who managed to cash in a trophy as the best live act. Swift was nominated for six awards. As if she knew, Swift had personally come to the state capital for her triumphal procession. One of the trophies was presented to her by David Hasselhoff (70).
Second place went to David Guetta and Nicki Minaj, each with two awards: Guetta received one for the best collaboration (with Bebe Rexha) and one in the electronic music category. Minaj took Best Hip-Hop and the all-important Best Song (Super Freaky Girl) category. Minaj was nominated for five awards together with singer Rosalía. The latter came across empty.
The show was hosted by a duo: British singer Rita Ora and New Zealand film director and comedian Taika Waititi. Ora, who is from Albania, took home an award for her personal style.
For the first time in ten years, the award ceremony took place in Germany. Music lovers in more than 170 countries were able to follow the international music event live on television.
Among the guests was Marius Müller-Westernhagen: “For me, such big events are always ambivalent,” he told the German news agency. “It’s too loud for me, too much, too much screaming. But my wife likes it, so I like to do it,” he said.
Just like last year, Badmómzjay was voted best German act. Born in Brandenburg, she triumphed over the musicians Kontra K, Giant Rooks, Leony and Nina Chuba. “I feel very bad because we have made history: the second time in a row, that is absolutely amazing,” she told the German news agency.
“I’m very happy that my whole family is here and that we are experiencing this moment together,” said the rapper. Loredana was honored as the best Swiss act. The band Muse won the prize in the rock category. They dedicated their trophy “to the people of Ukraine and the women of Iran,” as singer Matthew Bellamy announced.
Other awards went to: Seventeen (Best Newcomer), Lisa (Best K-Pop), Anitta (Best Latin), Gorillaz (Best Alternative), Chlöe (Best R&B), Sam Smith (Video For Good), BTS (Biggest Fans) , Seventeen (Best Push), Blackpink (Best Metaverse Performance) and to Ukrainians Lina Deshvar, Anna Kutova and Anfisa Yakovina for their humanitarian aid to war victims (Generation Change).
The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) have been presented annually since 1994. Previous awards in Germany have been in Berlin (1994, 2009), Frankfurt (2001, 2012) and Munich (2007). (sda/dpa)
