Often further seasons of a successful series are announced before the final episode flashes across the screens. But there is another way. For example, Netflix took the time to confirm the second season of “The Sandman” – and then also caused a lot of chaos on social networks. Although the series was streamed for hours worldwide and loved by audiences and critics alike, it took more than three months for Season 2 to be officially announced. This could also be the case with a fairly successful German Netflix production…
“The Empress” is also in the international top 10 on the Netflix charts of non-English-language series for more than a month after its release. This week alone, the production, which is about the childhood of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sisi, was streamed for 9.99 million hours. However, there is not yet a second season. Or maybe?
Is Season 2 of “The Empress” Already in Production?
Anyone who follows showrunner Katharina Eyssen (“Time of Secrets”) on Instagram may have also seen her stories this weekend, which give hope for a sequel that flares up. Unfortunately, Instagram Stories are not made to last forever – unless you backup the posts with a screenshot. We did it and we think all signs point to a reunification with the Habsburgs at Schönbrunn Palace! But see for yourself:

Despite several emoticons adorning the photo of Eyssen’s workplace, we see pages of a script on her screen (where we clearly recognize the word “Schönbrunn”), several biographies about Empress Elisabeth and a book of the collected works of Heinrich Heine – a German poet whom Sissi greatly admired.
Of course we don’t know if Eyssen is already writing the second season of “The Empress” or if he is just preparing a pitch for it. After all, Netflix has not yet made an official announcement of a sequel. Both variants would be good news for all fans though, as it looks like we’ll be learning more about the Empress’ early years soon.
