“The Walking Dead” fans had to wait more than five years until the spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” finally saw the big return of former series figurehead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). But after only six episodes it should have been that again? After initially being planned as a theatrical film trilogy, the spin-off was eventually released in theaters announced as a miniseries that tells a complete story within its six episodes and should therefore already be over.
After the penultimate episode made it seem as if there was still so much going on within the story that a single remaining episode would not be enough to bring everything to a successful conclusion, episode 6 has now taught us differently and with it probably also the burgeoning episodes. Hopes for a second season buried…
Happy ending for Rick and Michonne
Actually, you could have guessed it in advance, after all, during the course of “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” it was emphasized several times that Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are capable of anything together. And in the sixth and final episode, together they manage to deliver a decisive blow to the powerful CRM and thwart their plans to destroy Portland.
Under the supervision of the rest of the Civic Republic, the entire community then opens up to the rest of the post-apocalyptic world and Rick and Michonne are finally able to return home together. This is where the heartbreaking reunion with her children Judith (Cailey Fleming) and RJ (Antony Azor) takes place, with Rick and the latter seeing each other for the first time. A well-deserved happy ending for the Grimes family.

On power
Rick actor Andrew Lincoln even emphasized again in a promo for the finale of “The Ones Who Live,” that the series team wanted to give fans a story that felt complete, that is, truly packed into one season. It’s also fitting that previous spin-offs “The Walking Dead: Dead City” and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” had long been greenlit for a second season by the time of their season finales, as had the Rick and Michonne spin-off off, but it’s still not talked about.
And the final episode is undoubtedly a good point to end their story on an overall positive note after all the suffering and pain of the past few years. But perhaps the last word has not yet been spoken here…
Big Rick reunion in mega crossover event?
Yep, it looks like The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is over after just one season. However, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Rick and Michonne in the Walking Dead universe. Franchise boss Scott M. Gimple previously revealed that he plans to do so one day to bring all spin-offs back together into one big crossover (which would essentially be like a twelfth season of “Walking Dead”). And he confirmed this again in an interview with : “It would be extraordinary if they all ever breathed the same air. It could be an absolutely huge and traumatic reunion.”
After the finale of “The Ones Who Live,” many fans will still be longing for Rick to not only see his children, but also embrace his old comrades around Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). again or meet his former opponent Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) again. However, it remains to be seen whether this will actually happen. The whole thing is still a distant dream of the future. But we’re pretty sure we’ll see Rick and Michonne again sooner or later.
All episodes of “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” can be accessed exclusively in Germany via the Telekom streaming service Magenta TV. At a later date, the series (just like ‘Dead City’ and ‘Daryl Dixon’) will probably return to providers such as Amazon as a VoD purchase.
