British-American director Christopher Nolan, director of the award-winning film ‘Oppenheimer’, and his wife Emma Thomas, producer, will be awarded the titles of Knight and Dame of the British Empire by Charles III, the government announced Friday.
A couple whose film about the creator of the atomic bomb delighted the latest edition of the British BAFTA Awards and the US Academy Awards, is part of a list of winners in various categories proposed by the Executive Board, which also includes Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix.
It is also recognized Demis Hassabis, co-founder of DeepMindfor his services to artificial intelligence, as well as to various members of the ruling Conservative Party.
The Labor opposition criticized the award to Conservative donor and treasurer Mohamed Mansour, who received the highest knighthood for his services to politics and charity after donating £5m (€5.8m) to the party from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last year.
The Labor Party also questioned whether the list of decoratedto be invested later, was broadcast during Holy Week instead of New Year’s Day or the monarch’s ‘official’ birthday in June, as is customary.
The government has explained that it is urgent to appoint several politicians to the so-called privy council – which brings together hundreds of parliamentarians and members of the public – including the newly elected chief minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething.
