SBB expects very high passenger numbers on the Gotthard axis throughout Easter – especially on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday – SBB said in a press release on Monday.
Following the derailment of a freight train on August 10, 2023, the capacity of the Gotthard Base Tunnel remained limited. Since March 2, 2024, 38 passenger trains have been passing through the tunnel every weekend.
To meet high demand, SBB is operating a total of 49 additional trains from German-speaking Switzerland to Ticino and back during the Easter holidays. The majority of additional trains will pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, while others will travel via the panoramic route.
In addition, several regular trains, including EuroCity trains to Italy, will be expanded with additional cars or train units. This means approximately 49,000 additional seats are provided to passengers. Despite these measures, SBB cannot exclude the possibility of high frequencies occurring on trains in individual cases or in the event of disruption and asks for your understanding. SBB employees are on duty to provide on-site information at major train stations on the north-south axis. (dmo)
