Horsepower and Hors Category
French-born Christophe Baron has been shaking up the American Walla Walla Valley for decades with his seductive red wines made from Syrah and Grenache. Fine wines are simply amazing and provide maximum drinking pleasure shortly after bottling. “My job is to give people joy and pleasure with my wines,” Baron told Blick. Baron also produces premium Pinot Meunier Champagne, bottled exclusively in magnum bottles.
Dom Perignon
Responsible for the production of the famous Dom Pérignon champagne, Daniel Carvajal Perez has a dream job. While the 2013 Dom Pérignon was brimming with race and class, the 2009 Rosé put on a real fireworks show of flavor on the palate. Of course, quality sparkling wines cost a lot of money. But the high quality is undeniable.
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
Jean-Paul Thumb took over the management of Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, the family winery since the early 1990s. In just a few years he has brought his wines to the highest quality in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and has been awarded the maximum score of 100 points by the American wine critic Robert Parker on many occasions. Concentrated and complex red wines are always fresh and elegant, despite all their content.
Château de Saint Cosme
In the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley, the Barruol family at Château de Saint Cosme has been producing distinctive terroir wines for centuries. Fine wines are among the best from the small Gigondas appellation and can easily be stored for up to twenty years in good years. The picturesque village of Gigondas is just half an hour’s drive from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
cirillo
Australia has a new superstar in Cirillo. For the first time in the famous Barossa Valley, they are working with Grenache and not Syrah. Some of the true root vines are over 150 (!) years old and form the basis of aromatically complex and unique red wines. Of course, the eucalyptus note, which is unique to Australia, should not be missing.
San Leonardo
I’m discovering my next dream wines at San Leonardo, a well-established winery in Trentino in Northern Italy. Soft red wines are produced here from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère and Merlot grape varieties. The work is carried out according to organic specifications and using quality French oak. The example of San Leonardo shows that even outside Tuscany, Italy can create magnificent red wines from Bordeaux grape varieties in the bottle.
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion
At the stand of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion I chat with responsible oenologist Guillaume Pouthier, who was named the best winemaker in France in 2023 by the French magazine “Figaro Vin”. Complex red wines from the seven-hectare Bordeaux winery are in greater demand than ever. Pouthier’s secret recipe: “Cabernet Franc as the main grape variety and a high rate of whole-cluster fermentation,” he explains to Blick.
Château Pichon-Longueville-Countess de Lalande
I have two magnificent Bordeaux red wines in my glass, with sunny vintages of 2009 and 2018: Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande. They are fruity and full-bodied and paired with just enough elegance and depth. As with Pauillac wines, delicate drops end up on the fruit, making you want to take the next sip.
Chateau Montrose
Two strong vintages of 2010 and 2019 reveal that premium Château Montrose wines have reached the Premier Grand Cru Classé level in terms of quality. The presence and complexity of both drops is impressive even at a young age. If you’re lucky enough to have one of the two wines in your cellar, don’t rush to open it. Some wine publications give drinking intervals as far back as 2100.
Western
The crowning result of this small flagship series is the magical Occidental Pinot Noir from Sonoma in the US state of California. Harvard graduate Catherine Kistler and her fiancé Eli Leavitt show Blick wines that are floral-fruity, smooth and deep red. In the scent of the wines, red cherries, cranberries and flowers, as well as thin orange peel and light tobacco, can be felt. Pinot Noirs to fall in love with!
