Oscar immediately hopes for streaming instead of in the cinema: starting today with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video

Those responsible for the satire ‘American Fiction’ can legitimately hope to take home an Academy Award, after all, Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut (‘Master of None’) has been nominated in five categories (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Score).

Anyone who was hopeful of seeing the Oscar on the big screen will now be disappointed: ‘American Fiction’ will not be released in cinemas in this country. Instead, the film is now coming straight to the streaming subscription. As of today, February 27, 2024, the tragicomedy can be found on Amazon Prime Video:

And that’s what ‘American Fiction’ is about

Thelonious Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) is a college professor of English literature known simply as “Monk” by his friends and colleagues. But the respected author is increasingly irritated by the tired and offensive clichés in black entertainment and the new cultural sensitivities he observes among his own students. He’s also having trouble getting his latest novel to a publisher and keeps getting feedback that his work isn’t “black enough.”

The situation becomes all the more frustrating because its competition serves precisely those clichés and is celebrated precisely for its predictable stories of ghetto suffering. When his mother becomes seriously ill and he runs into financial problems, he decides to write a novel under a pseudonym in which he combines all the clichés that the market currently thinks so little about. And his strategy seems to be working, as the publishing rights are purchased directly by a well-known publisher – and soon Hollywood comes calling to make a movie of the book. But in Monk conscience speaks…

In addition to Jeffrey Wright (“The Batman”), “American Fiction” also featured Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), John Ortiz (“Silver Linings”), Keith David (“The Thing from Another World”) and Erika Alexander (“Get Out”) and “OC, California” stars Adam Brody on camera for Cord Jefferson.
