The “Dance of the Dragons” civil war really got going at the end of the first season of “House Of The Dragon”. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her half-brother Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) have each been crowned and will now fight by any means necessary for supremacy over the Seven Kingdoms. Of course Targaryens also contains dragons. And if you have more dragons, you have a definite advantage.
Therefore, in Episode 10, Daemon (Matt Smith) heads for Dragon Mountain, a volcano, to “tame” one of the dragons that live there: The animal is Vermithor, also called “Bronze Fury”, the second largest dragon in the House Of The Dragon era after Aemond’s dragon Vhagar. Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed this in an interview with Variety.
In order not to be immediately roasted by the dragon, Daemon approaches him singing. The song is in High Valyrian – the language used in the Game Of Thrones world to train dragons and give them commands. The song lines are not subtitled in the episode. However, we have the Valyrian text and the English translation with us found – we cannot guarantee the correctness of course.
The lyrics of “Hāros Bartossi”
The song is called “Hāros Bartossi” (English: “With three heads”, German: “With three heads”) and is written by Ti Mikkel and translated by David J. Peterson. Peterson is the “language creator” of the “Game Of Thrones” world, developed the Dothraki and Valyrian languages. You can find the Valyrian and English text on the website, We have tried to translate the four stanzas into German for you:
Of course, you can’t really “tame” such a dragon – if at all, a dragon listens to its dragon rider. However, a dragon only bonds with one human being. Only when that human dies is the dragon free to form a new bond.
This will be Vermithor’s new rider
However, with luck, few other people can approach dragons without getting fired right away, apart from that one permanent dragon rider – mainly Targaryens, but also dragon trainers, some of which we see in “House Of The Dragon”, have already seen in the dragon pit. For this they use Valyrian commands. Daemon has now approached Vermithor and soothed him with a song.
Daemon probably doesn’t want to win the dragon for himself, but for someone else on Rhaenyra’s side. After all, Daemon already “has” a dragon: Caraxes, also called “Bloodworm”.
In George RR Martin’s book later the Targaryen bastard Hugh Hammer to the Rider of Vermithor and fight with him on the side of the “Blacks” for Queen Rhaenyra. The last horseman of Vermithor before Hugh Hammer was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. After his death, Vermithor retreated to a cave in Drachenberg near Drachenstein, where Daemon then visits him in episode 10.
currently have the Greens have four dragons, one of which is a cub, the Blacks have seven adult dragons – that is, after the season 1 finale there are only six left. If Daemon were able to win over the riderless and savage dragons, which readily nest near Dragonstone, they could further increase their advantage. Riderless are currently Vermithor and Silverwing in Dragon Mountain, and Laenor’s dragon Seasmoke in Driftmark, plus there are three wild dragons – this would give the blacks 12 dragons. In addition, Daemon can also hatch dragon eggs.
We will find out how the dragons will continue in Season 2 of “House Of The Dragon”, which will most likely not start until 2024. Here’s what we already know about it:
