Before the series arrives, one of the biggest sci-fi highlights of the 1990s is now available on Netflix

Things didn’t exactly look groundbreaking at the box office in the late 1990s with the $45 million “Galaxy Quest.” Ultimately, the space adventure was able to gross $90 million, but that wasn’t enough to actually make a profit. Nevertheless, the science fiction comedy quickly became a cult film, which was due to several points:

‘Galaxy Quest’ is also a parody of ‘Star Trek’, but the action film with its dream cast of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman also works excellently as an independent adventure. Creativity, speed and a wonderful sense of situational comedy and puns make ‘Galaxy Quest’ a real highlight of the sci-fi genre, which does not lose its charm even after several viewings.

This is what ‘Galaxy Quest’ is about

At the center of the action is the former cast (including the aforementioned Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman) of a highly successful sci-fi series called “Galaxy Quest”. At a fan convention, the crew is taken to their ship by real aliens. The aliens assume that the actors are real heroes!

Now they must help the aliens fight the evil Sarris. And while the stars of “Galaxy Quest” still think the kidnapping is part of their act, they soon find themselves in the middle of a major battle in the depths of space. Here they will soon have to prove that they cannot only be heroic in front of the cameras.

There will be a series soon

In 2015, it was announced that Paramount TV Studios had ordered a series called ‘Galaxy Quest’ that was originally set to appear on Amazon Prime Video. The plan was for the series to follow directly from the film. The original cast around Tim Allen and Co. should return too. However, the series’ development suffered a serious setback with the death of Alan Rickman.

Although screenwriter Peter Scheer briefly commented on the ‘Galaxy Quest’ series again in 2018, there was still no movement in production. But last month announcedthat Paramount Television Studios is making another attempt at developing a ‘Galaxy Quest’ series. Mark Johnson, the film’s producer, will once again be involved as executive producer.

If the series does happen, it will be available as a subscription to Paramount+. But whether we can really expect a ‘Galaxy Quest’ series in the near future will become clear in the coming months. It is also interesting to wonder whether Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Co. also return.
