We start the new 2024 with this very exciting wine question from our Blick reader Peter Knaus. There have long been a number of wines whose prices are above 100 francs per 0.75 liter bottle. Peter ends his question with: “Is this more for collectors and enthusiasts?”
The majority of wines sold in this country are priced below 10 francs, while in the highly competitive German market the average price is even below 5 francs. Can a 100-franc wine be 20 times better than a 5-franc wine? Is it possible to reach the prices of such wines?
A question of perspective
If someone is completely satisfied with the quality of a 10-franc wine and the wine fully fulfills its purpose as a luxury product, it will be difficult for him to justify the price of a 100-franc wine. Additionally, ten bottles of cheaper wine can be purchased compared to just one bottle of expensive wine. Even if the latter is superior to cheaper wine in terms of quality, from this perspective it is hardly worth the price.
Economists like to look at these types of questions from a supply and demand perspective. If all bottles of an expensive wine are sold to end consumers at a certain price, there is a corresponding demand. Buyers of such bottles will answer “yes” to Peter Knaus’ question for whatever reason. Completing wine collections, hobby, vanity, or a particular taste may be possible reasons for purchasing high-priced wine.
However, it should be clearly stated that expensive wines are not better than cheap wines. At a recent blind tasting of Blick Merlot, Bordeaux wine Château Mangot 2020, offered for 25 francs per 0.75-litre bottle, outperformed Château L’Eglise Clinet 2017, which is nearly ten times more expensive, with 17.57 out of 20. points (17.14 Points). But ultimately each person must decide for themselves whether the price of a particular bottle of wine is worth it.
