Advance ticket sales for arguably the biggest comic book exhibition Switzerland has ever seen start today. Exhibition hall 1.2 in Basel will be filled with heroes from the Marvel universe from March 23 until the end of August 2024. And they have everything. Marvel movies about the Avengers, Thor, Spider-Man or Black Widow regularly bring in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. To date, there have been 68 movies and 21 TV series from the comic book universe.
At the exhibition, fans can expect original artwork, movie props, costumes and much more; You’ll probably never get close to Spider-Man and his friends. In anticipation, here’s a small selection of what’s in store: the ten (subjectively) best Marvel characters of all time, in ascending order. And: Yes, there are mostly men; It wasn’t that easy to find a few cool women in the Marvel universe, which is full of muscular men. But they exist.
10
hulk
He is green. At least when it gets ugly. And he is extraordinarily powerful when he is full of spite. How come? Lonely nuclear physicist Bruce Danner is so genetically modified after an atomic bomb accident that he turns into the Hulk when he has emotional disagreements and then turns everything upside down. Of course, this brings the military into play, as well as some supervillains who want to control the center of power and use it as a weapon for themselves. It may sound crazy, but it works great in the comic book store and the movie box office.
9
Poison
The “Alien” trilogy was a huge success at the box office. No wonder Marvel wants a piece of the pie – and so it invents the perfect journalist Eddie Brook, played by Tom Hardy (46), who falls victim to a parasitic alien and from then on has a sort of double identity with many teeth. It has black slippery skin and a long tongue. Originally the arch-nemesis of Spider-Man, who wants to prepare the world for an invasion by his slimy friends, this fan eventually evolves into something of an anti-hero through various comics and movies.
8.
Thor
Marvel creators don’t care at all what mythology a god or monster comes from. Whether it’s the sausage of Elektra in Greek myth or the werewolf legend; Marvel is good at everything. This also applies to Norse myths about Thor, the hammer-throwing god of war. At Marvel, he becomes a founding member of the lucrative “Avengers,” a group of superheroes created solely to make it easier for fans of individual, established characters to get started on other characters.
7
wolverine
While early characters needed a reason to develop superpowers, like a spider bite or a nuclear accident, Marvel reserves the complex derivation for later characters and relies solely on mutants. Same goes for Wolverine, who has extendable claws, superhuman strength, and faster body healing abilities than normal humans. The character, which first appeared in 1974, became known to a wider audience with the X-Men film series in 2000. Actor Hugh Jackman, 55, portrayed him with his hair curled into wolf ears in a total of nine films, all of which grossed nearly $300 million at the box office.
6
black widow
The Cold War and McCarthyism (the hunting of alleged communists) in the 1950s still leave their mark on US culture today. Among other things, in the Black Widow figure. Originally a Russian spy, this shady character emerged as Iron Man’s rival until he was freed from Soviet brainwashing and then, of course, immediately fought for the American cause alongside the Avengers. ), starring the film, grossed almost $400 million at the box office in 2021.
5
iron Man
Like many superheroes, Iron Man Tony Stark benefits from being born into a billion-dollar fortune. Even better: Stark is the child of a defense industry entrepreneur. Of course, you can have your superhero costume made yourself. Robert Downey Jr. (58) has portrayed Iron Man in various films since 2008, fighting in Afghanistan among other locations.
4
Jessica Jones
She hits hard and drinks even harder: Private investigator Jessica Jones not only has iron muscles and raven-black hair, but also an iron liver and a raven-black heart. An accident involving chemicals and subsequent coma gives him superpowers that he initially used as a superhero. Until she meets Killgrave, a mind-controlling evil psychopath who mistreats her for months. Later, traumatized, he gives up being a superhero and opens a private detective agency, where he drowns his traumas mostly in whiskey on the rocks. In the Netflix series, played by Krysten Ritter (41), she is probably the coolest, most depressing and also the most beautiful superhero of all time.
3
Dr. Strange
Neither the bite of an atomic frog, crocodile, or worm, nor a chemical accident gives Doctor Strange his powers; instead, unusually, he is simply a magician. But he’s someone who raises money for his studio: he’s been making comics since 1963 and has been raking in cash since 2016. Then Benedict Cumberbatch (47) decided to embody the wizard. Although critics hated the second film, it still grossed around half a billion dollars at the box office.
2
Deadpool
Deadpool has only existed in comic books since 1990, and has become a cultural phenomenon since 2016. But what the heck: Ryan Reynolds, 47, as a truly disgusting-looking superhero — essentially melted down by an accident — with so much under-the-radar, goofy fart humor that it’s actually funny, he’s a different kind of superhero: one that really elevates the genre. he takes the blame one notch, addressing the audience directly with constant side comments. The two self-deprecating films achieved instant cult status, and fans are eagerly awaiting the third installment, scheduled for release in July 2024.
one
Spider Man
When cult punk band The Ramones cover the animated series’ theme song, you know you’ve hit the top 10 in the superhero universe in 1995. Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, was bitten by a radioactive spider and later gained spider-like super powers. And now you understand what era the first Marvel characters came from: the late 1950s and early 1960s, when anything with an Atom on it was still considered top-notch. Tobey Maguire (48) has been playing Spider-Man since 2002 and has been making the safes ring. The largest streaming service ever negotiated is its account. He gave three billion (!) dollars to Sony and Marvel.
